Octane requirement
Octane requirement
I’m looking to see the general census whether to continue to use 91 octane on the rlx hybrid used engine or switch to 87 octane. What are your thoughts on the matter. What are you guys using and how many km on your car?
I've only ever used premium gas in my 2014 RLX Sport Hybrid. I use Shell gas almost exclusively because it is the closest gas station to our house - their premium now has an octane rating of 94 (it was 91 for the longest time, then they bumped it up to 93 for a while and now it is 94. I suspect there is an octane war happening amongst the competing gas retailers).
The extra cost of premium gas is insignificant for me because I drive very little, putting a total of less than 30,000km (20000 miles) on my car in 10 years of driving. I'm of the opinion that the car was designed to run premium gas and so it will run BEST with premium gas and so I only put premium gas in it.
Just my two cents.

You are going to get 100 different opinions from 100 different people on this.
My personal opinion: I only ever used name-brand premium in my '03 TL, which made it to 200k miles, and I do the same in my RDX which now has 196k on it.
I'd argue the benefit to premium isn't the higher octane, it's the extra detergents in the gas that help clean the cylinder walls and prevent gas from leaking into the oil. I've also read that you can get the same benefits from this by simply running Techron every few fillups with regular gas.
More importantly, I avoid gas stations that look very old or infrequently used.
