Audio Unit Volume Control

Audio Unit Volume Control
The volume control on the audio unit, the one next to the screen, is malfunctioning--it will turn the sound up a little or down a little but not all the way down, and won't get to a level where I want it. The volume control on the steering wheel works fine as does everything else comprising the audio unit. The Acura dealer recommends that the whole unit be replaced and estimated $5557.17. I politely declined; besides, the control on the steering wheel works. Anybody else have this happen? I would probably buy a transistor radio with a 9v battery before spending so much.

Haven't had it happen to me, but I would think it's just a simple potentiometer replacement. Perhaps there is a local electronics repair location near you that could replace just that one piece?
(edit) or you could find a broken unit or used unit in a junkyard near you and have the electronics repair location swap out the control.

Could it be just a little bit of built-up grime due to lack of use because you tend to favor the control on the steering wheel? The first thing I would try would be to give the knob a good spin in both directions before starting the car and after turning it off for a while. It sounds too easy but this approach has worked for me. It also helps you feel like you're doing something about the issue and so you think about it less in the meantime!

Also, think about buying a non-working used unit for that knob part. You should be able to find it for less than $50 I hope - then have someone swap the knob
