Transmission Chatter
Transmission Chatter
Hi everyone. I have a 19 RDX with 58k on it. All service up to date including transmission fluid about 5k ago.
On our way to Bend for vacation with bike rack and roof box and luggage. Nothing the RDX shouldn’t be able to handle. After an aggressive drive over the mountain pass and passing people (safely) the car started making a clunking chattering noise from the trans/drivetrain. Took it in and they can’t figure it out. No codes, but when it clunks/chatters it hesitates or feels sluggish. Any advice or help? See attached.

Hard to tell virtually, but I noticed the engine sound changed when the nosie occured. Sounds like the throttle was released a little bit. Did you keep the same pressure on the pedal while recording the video? Also, does the noise only occur during moderate-strong acceleration?
It was during moderate accel. Around 2k-3k rpm. If I get on it and accel aggressively it makes no noise. It’s just when I slowly roll on the accel (not causing a downshift but loading the current gear) and the chatter only lasts a bit. Like 2 seconds. The weird part is the hesitation I feel like when you try and accelerate a cold carb engine too fast. Or you forget the choke is on and try to ride. If that makes sense. Another video attached but it’s very short. Turn up the volume.
The wastegate sounds rather loud...
The increase in boost when the noise occurred looks weird if your pedal input was constant between 1.5-2k rpm. Is the noise rpm and/or gear dependent?
I feel the noise is loud enough, that an experienced mechanic should be able to find out where it came from and gather more clues.
