Add Wireless CarPlay to older RDX

Saw this device that you can plug into US and then use CarPlay wirelessly. No idea if this works or not I dont need it, I have a 2022, but thought some people on here might appreciate it:

I received one of these units and it works great! I previously bought a different module that wouldn’t work at all. There is a maybe 1 minute delay after I start my car. This way my phone stays in my pocket (handy at the gas pump for ApplePay) but I get full CarPlay functionality wirelessly. I am pleased.

@Padre Dave May I ask how long you have used it and if any random or weird bugs/behavior has come up? reason I ask is because I was looking at one of these for my '19 RDX however some people online say it can be spotty as far as successful connections and if you start you car when the phone is still in range of home wifi... Thanks in advance! Appreciate it

I’ve been using the unit for a couple of weeks now. What is does is to establish a Bluetooth connection with my iPhone and launches Apple CarPlay. I have also used my VOX app to play music through this connection,. I get full CarPlay with routing, calendar, phone, and Messages.

It takes the better part of 2 minutes to connect, but now that I know it is coming, I don’t “mess” with to make it move faster…..impatient old guys…..sheesh. So, I am happy with this one!

I just bought this unit a week ago, and have been very pleased with it. Setup was a breeze, and it will automatically launch CarPlay. Like Padre Dave, I’m a bit impatient when it takes a long time for everything to connect, but I think most of that is the Acura infotainment booting up. Truthfully, for me it’s not much longer than the infotainment boot up.

CarPlay in the RDX isn’t as clean as it is with other vehicles. It is, however, an improvement over Acuras infotainment.

I have been using the Carlinkit for the last 6 moths and it work great with my 2021 RDX and iPhone. Be patient when you start up as it takes about a minute to connect. I also plugged in a charging pad and now my setup is completely wireless.

I have one of these wireless Carplay devices. It works well the vast majority of the time and I use it frequently on local trips. It saves the nuisance of plugging the phone into a cable. However on a couple of long trips, it has cut out a few times. But for a long trip it is not a big deal to just use the cable for which I have had no CarPlay cut outs.

Just as an aside, there are still gremlins in the audio system of the RDX….I suspect it is in the USB port itself which occasionally refuses to accept any connection, whether USB drive, Carlink or cable to my iPhone. The only way (or maybe the simplest) to fix it is to stop, turn off the engine, open and close the door and then restart the car…..that has caused it to boot up…..darn fickle port (resisting sexist joke impulse right now….wouldn’t be prudent)…..

I agree 100%. Sometimes it boots flawlessly, other times not so much!

After using carlinkit for about a month, i agree with those who say it works most of the time but sometimes it doesnt.. So i would say overall the benefits out weigh the annoyances which happen but are an acceptable level i feel.

Does it drain your iPhone battery very quickly?

Yea, I have noticed that but never caused me to plug the phone in for charging. I have a 2019 so I don't have the contact charging surface.

2020 Acura RDX

I’m using Carlinkit 4.0 it works perfect except the smaller right side screen won’t stay on navigation. It usually mirrors the main screen info. So whenever the system boots up, I’ll have to change the right screen back. Anyone else have this issue?

I observe the same thing with my backup camera…..I think it is coincidental, as I have remained in my garage a bit longer before backing out and have waited for the Apple Car Play to initialize. By waiting longer I have the music cued and playing, and then back out. The music is running, so that is not it.

Today I ran my USB drives that contain the FLAC and the 5.1 songs so nicely provided by participants here. WOW!

As has been stated here elsewhere, the AppleCarPlay is so much easier now with the Carlink unit, but when I remember to plug in my USB drives I have a majorly better ride!

Carlink 2019 - 2021 Soultion.

After various settings and reboots. Now Playing by default on the same screen on boot up. If you set other apps within CarPlay the apps stay on the main screen. If you set an Acura app then it won’t stay but defaults back to Apple apps. So it’s Apple Maps on the Main and Now Playing on the sounds de screen. This will stay after reboots. I’d rather had Acura Nav as I fear the Apple Maps would be a extra drain on the battery. I’ll give a try tho and see how it goes. If you the direct line usb with CarPlay it stay with Acura Nav on main and Now Playing on the side. Oh well. Tks for response.

Which charging pad is compatible? I couldn’t find any options.

I wanted to post an update: I’ve been using the Carlinkit for a while now, and it seems to work pretty well for most applications. Yes, it sometimes boots slowly and yes sometimes it doesn’t boot at all. Not sure if that’s Acura or Carlinkit.

One thing that I’ve found pretty much unusable is using the phone as, well, a phone! Theres a horrific audio delay, making a phone conversation nearly impossible. I noticed the delay while watching a YouTube video (I was waiting for my wife in a parking lot). I didn’t think too much of it until I tried to have a phone conversation. I’m again not sure if this is Acura or carlinkit. I’ll try it in my truck and see if there is the same issue.

As for a wireless charger, I use one of the mag safe chargers in the car, and it works great.
