Who Jalopnik Thinks We Are

I don't cuss out loud, but this guy sure makes me want to. I don't need a Beamer to make me feel like I've "made it".

https://jalopnik.com/this-boring-acu...ron-1830096933

"It’s not that Acura is a company that’s about making “bad” cars, per se. But Acura is a company for people who have secured their place firmly in the lower middle management of life, and are content never budging from that position. It makes cars for people who have done okay in life, and that’s fine, and maybe they want to treat themselves, but they can’t sacrifice things like reliability or practicality for anything crazy like “fun” or “so help me God I am so bored I could die.”

It’s a car for people who, when they’re feeling really crazy, reach for the Diet Sierra Mist. Every night. And every night, at dinner, which they’ve cooked at home, they always make sure there’s a salad, and when their spouse reaches for the stash of Little Bites brownies in the back of the pantry in their all-white kitchen, they say, “you sure you should be eating that?”

That is who Acuras are made for."

It's insulting but, I have to admit that I laughed.

I guess I'm just a typical bourgeois Acura owner.

Screw the Hipsters.

I was gonna say... seems accurate.

Some folk are a higher on the food chain. Some lower. But the overall average.... hit right on the mark.

Bet the writer aspires to be able to own an Acura. Or even own a current Honda. Sneering at his betters just shows him to be a loser.

Several people here have owned Bimmers. So what?

Look, in all seriousness, this generalization shit is a bit annoying, but it's jalopnik and they have always pulled this crap.

We all just need to get over it.

I fail to see where jalopnik was wrong in their assessment. Anyone care to point it out to me?

I see one error- where they called Acura reliable. That simply isn't true. Sorry.

it's also fair to point out that you can buy a bmw x3 with 355hp, right now.

Clearly part of it is tongue-in-cheek humor. He's a writer, he's trying to get reactions out of people so more people read his stuff. Plus its jalopnik...hardly the peter jennings of automotive journalism.

There'll be haters for every single type of car owner/demographic/socioeconomic class/etc. Just gotta brush it off, laugh a little at yourself and then carry on.

Don't take it the wrong way. That's a brand issue, not a you issue.

If they had sports cars, they wouldn't say "middle management", they'd say "successful young professional"

Their assessment does seem accurate. But it does imply that theres something wrong with buying/making a reasonably priced, reliable, entry level luxury vehicle. Which is actually a smart choice for people who want to live within their means or aren't rich.

I also like how they almost as an added afterthought are like oh wait we aren't talking about older acuras or the NSX we just like to generalize and then mention some exceptions to our over generalizations.

1. The RDX is their hottest selling vehicle right now. Ain't no one gonna look at a modded TLX, almost four years into its production cycle.

2. Why are you comparing a BMW to an Acura, when it costs 10-15k more?

And you say they're out to lunch

You live in a semi-sane country and you and your wife have semi-sane spending habits. I think you're doing just fine.

I'm just too damn cheap to buy a Beemer, and "life style" accessories ( like expensive plastic crap with designer labels ) have no appeal whatsoever. So if practicality is uncool, I guess Jalopdik will just have to deal with it.

This is a bad style writing for getting attention by all means. I am not sure about the writer’s sport and fun of driving expertise. One
of his previous cars, judging by his signature block, was Yugo. He wanted to punch somebody and picked up the ACURA fans. Just ignore the article. Here is from the same Jalopnik a very different attitude to the 3G RDX:https://jalopnik.com/the-2019-acura-...-ye-1822084372 .

I traded in my 2012 BMW 550i (w/ Dinan Stage 2 tune) which I purchased new for my lowly 2016 RDX Advance. I wonder what kind of person that makes me

I only have an issue with how the writer made it seem like owning an Acura somehow implied that you are going nowhere in life and that you must be a nobody. If you drive a normal Acura (I.E not an NSX) nobody is going to really stop and pay attention but at the same time it doesn't say that you are unsuccessful either IMO.

I actually do agree with a lot of what he was trying to say. This is SEMA!!!! Where car companies are supposed to go a little nuts. They almost did nothing to the exterior and did absolutely nothing to the interior and I agree 345hp when it normally makes 272 really is nothing. Would have been more fun to just see some sort of 550hp twin turbo RDX mockup than a tepid 345hp model. I get it. The writer was trying to outline that Acura is so ok with being inoffensive that 345hp seems huge to them when in this day and age most family crossovers are making close to 300hp. 345hp would have been amazing at sema like 20 years ago....so he isn't wrong at all.

Honda and Acura have always been conservative when it comes to power output. Always. But their engines themselves have also been notoriously reliablreliable.

So likely two things- the engine is quoted at 345hp by Acura... Which means that's likely more like wheel horsepower, not crank horsepower. And if its reliable, as I'm sure they want it to be perceived as such, even better. I think that RDX would be fun 10/10.

Call it an RDX-S preview? it's like showcasing the 3.0T... without actually showcasing the 3.0T

BMW isn't even close to the drivers machine it was years ago. Lexus should fire the team that designed that ugly front grill. Never heard of this jamoke before over at Jalopnik until I read this article. He must have penis envy 'cause I think he's missing his.

This thread is too much fun. Thanks OP for sharing.

Although vile, I don't think the assessment is entirely wrong.

So, many of us who owned a BMW/Audi/Mercedes and are now coming to Acura because of what? Are Acuras more fun and exciting to drive? I bet most of us that came from that route are thinking with our left side of the brain; "So I sacrifice a little and get a valued luxury vehicle and maybe it's more reliable so i don't have to worry about little problems" .

Yep, that's Acura for me (speaking about MDX/RDX, NSX notwithstanding). And there is nothing wrong with that. Let's be confident in our own skin.

It’s stupid to judge someone because of what you see them driving. You simply don’t know what else they might have in their garage.

LoL. That statement isn't too far off for me. I'm not even in lower middle management anymore.

There's plenty of insults that could be said about BMW or Audi owners. And a LOT of insults (mainly regarding intelligence) that could be said about owners of anything manufactured by Chrysler. I'll go with the "insults" they gave for Acura owners

BTW, no insults for those people from me personally. Just sayin that there's plenty that could be had. I know BMW owners that aren't pricks, and actually use their turn signals. And Dodge Caravan owners that are smart people but simply made a mistake.

So true.

Alice Walton is the wealthiest woman in the world.... Her vehicle of choice is a 2006 Ford F-150 King Ranch, with a modest price of around $40,000

I think the authors description of Acura owners would also apply to Lexus owners. Not overly extravagant. Not as hot a performer as top-of-the-line German autos (except for the less-mainstream GS F and LS) and usually a strong focus on reliability and practicality. Just sayin.

It's always wrong to generalize but this doesn't apply to me. I can buy a BMW, MB or Audi but I am pro Japanese. Don't ask me why...

I love Lexus but I am not a big fan of their design. When I was shopping for a car (2013), I test drove G37X, IS and TL. IS was too small ad boring, G37X was amazing but I didn't like the material and seats. I went with TL due to decent handling, amazing interior and a great sound system.

What would be interesting is if there were actual data...on who the new RDX owners are. Maybe say a thread asking who the RDX owners are and what they do for living and for fun......should be interesting

Also, this applies to Infiniti and Lexus. Most people associate reliability to these Japanese brands. Therefore, they want a reliable Japanese car to last them for 10+ years. If anyone tells me here a German car's cost of maintenance is the same as a Jap in 10 years. Then you have no clue about cars.

Honestly it's doesn't bother me...who care...I know people make $500K a year and still driving a Mazda CX5. His theory is wrong...This will apply to 3rd world countries, where there is a huge gap between poor, middle class and rich people.
