Look at the driver side dashboard from outside the car. There should be a metal tag where the dash and windshield come together. That has the VIN. It also likely is on the driver side door jamb. At least on my vehicles (2022 EDX and 2013 Honda Accord) I find no evidence of it in the trunk area. Having said that I'm aware that it is under the spare tire on some cars.

Yeah, I’ve never seen a VIN on the tailgate on an RDX. It’s always been on the dash by the windshield and the driver door jamb for me. VIN inspection is usually just to verify it matches the paperwork, nothing fancy.

I was asked the same question during an inspection once. For most cars the process is pretty basic and they only want to confirm the number matches records. If someone wants extra peace of mind a VIN Report can help understand what details inspectors usually look at and why locations vary by model. It helped me feel prepared going in and avoid overthinking the appointment.

Sounds like a quick way for California to make a buck (or several).

I just checked and there is no VIN on the tailgate.

Who answered Yes on the poll? Can you post a picture (blanking out your VIN of course).

I can't speak with any certainty on new cars but in the past cars actually had TWO serial number plates or stampings. One is usually visible through the windshield at the dashboard. The other is stamped into the body or frame and is often underneath the car or somewhat hidden behind a component that many people never know about. On classic VW Beattles the was a number plate pop riveted near the windshield or drivers door jam but they also have a stamped number underneath the rear seat where the pan begins to fork to both sides of the transmission. Something the police can check on in cases of stolen vehicles.
