Spare tire

Has anyone check out the donut to see if a full size tire would fit in its place

Yes. In a 2G TL, NO, it won't.

I looked at the a spec today. No spare tire. Same size space for the tire but The spare for the other trim packages is a half size donut. It is barely visible from looking straight behind. If you put a full size spare in the space I imagine it will be highly visible and impact rear ground clearance.

This is the 3rd-gen RDX sub-forum.

SH-AWD come with a compact spare, except A-spec. FWD and A-spec don't come equipped with a spare, but it wouldn't be difficult to add the compact spare and associated hoist and jack, etc. Lots of discussion of this in sport hybrid threads on MDXers.

Clearance to the rear trim panel is tight for the compact spare on SH-AWD Advance, although this might be because of the "hands-free access" foot sensor for the tailgate. ( A feature in search of a need, IMO ) Compact spare is a smaller overall diameter than full-size tire, so I doubt full-size spare would clear. And it would definitely hang low if it did "fit".

In Canada, all models are awd and all models come with a space saver spare, so there is obviously room, regardless of whether there is a foot sensor or 20 inch tires. All space savers, for all models in Canada have the same tire size.

I know the "space saver" spare will fit with foot sensor, because I can look under the butt of the Advance SH-AWD in my garage and see it. 20" tires don't matter because outer diameter of all applicable tire sizes is the same.

I meant there might not be room for a full-size spare, especially in models with the foot sensor. If I get really bored, I'll try hoisting up one of the winter wheels I have lying around for other Acuras that have the same tire size. But there may be more clearance in trims without the foot sensor.

I'll still try to do the experiment, but page 585 of the 2019 RDX Owner's Manual has a discussion of changing a flat, and it specifically describes storing the removed full-size wheel/tire inside the vehicle, in a provided special bag, and securing the silly thing with straps. Not promising for full-size spare under the vehicle.

NO GO! The spare tire hoist for 2019 RDX has a fitting for the wheel that will ONLY fit a steel compact spare wheel. It even says that on the fitting. By design, it is too chunky to fish through the center bore of a standard aluminum wheel. I'm not sure why they go to all this trouble, but maybe because clearance to the exhaust pipes is close and they want to avoid bursting spares.

I get the increased cargo space, but I hate under car spares. Over time the damn hoist thing will rust and act up.

So far it's working fine in my '05 MDX.

It helps to drop the spare once in a while and if you're being really good, lube the cable. Rear diff fluid service is an optimal time to do this if you DIY.

The hoist assembly can be replaced in dire need, but they are still going strong on our 2003 and 2005 MDXs despite upper midwest road salt and "kids" that are too cheap to wash cars.

Has anyone been able to install the $399 spare tire package on the 2WD model?

Thanks Wander...I got my A-Spec on order..I didn't think the center bore of the donut be any different from a full size center bore(64.1). I guess I just put the spare in the cargo space.

The center bore diameter is the same, but the aluminum wheel has a deeper "tunnel" because the wall is thicker, if that makes any sense.

I had to try to ram the hoist lift through it and fail before I finally decided to read the big bold embossed message on the thing: "FITS COMPACT SPARE ONLY".

That's just the way I roll...

I always used to like Canadians, but now, with all the better stuff you guys are getting on these cars, and paying less for it, I am beginning to lose patience with y’all.

I have AWD with the spare tire underneath the car. Does anyone know where there are explicit instructions on how to get the spare tire out? The owner's manual is absolutely no help and I can't find any instructions online. I want to be prepared in case I need it. I just need to know how to lower it and remove the plastic holder. Thanks.

Starting on page 579 of the OM there are pretty specific instructions. Maybe do a 'practice' session before a real need arises.

A spec. No spare?

Sorry to threadjack, but the ASpec doesn't come with a spare? Is that true?

true, however I have heard that there is a spare tire kit available and that it will work with the A spec because the radius is the same. I don’t know first hand if that’s true or not but others here have maybe even ordered it for their aspec.

In Canada, the A-spec comes with a spare so there is room to accommodate one. I just posted a new thread because I got a flat tire (with less than 300km driven!) and needed to swap it out with the spare.

The US OM only has 131 pages. The instructions don’t even tell you how to lower the tire or even where it is.

That would be the US Owner's Guide, which is supplied in hard copy form with the vehicle. The US Owner's Manual ( available as a download or special-order hard copy ) is just as erudite as its northern cousin.

BTW, I'm digging that blacked-out retro look wheel on the A-spec. Maybe go for a full set?

As has already been mentioned that's the abbreviated Owner's Guide. The full blown Owner's Manual printed version can be ordered (no charge) or downloaded from here:

Thanks for that, I have all of them downloaded from the site (have since before taking delivery) but only have the owner’s guide in printed copy in the glove box from delivery. I was fine with that setup until now. Would suck trying to figure out the spare without hard copy instructions in the glove box...little bit of an oversight by Acura in my opinion.
