Rock to the Windshield
Rock to the Windshield
I ran into a situation that may be of interest—I’d guess that some folks with earlier year models with Honda Sensing or Acura Watch may have been through this already, but the 2019’s sensor technology is new to me.
I was on the interstate 2 weeks ago when a large dump truck pulled on from an entry ramp. Although I was in the other lane (I try not to get behind those things), it still threw a pebble or rock into the right side of my windshield. Looked like a typical small, “bullseye” divot, so I took it right to the local shop of the national windshield repair place. They said “oh yeah, we can fix that in a jiffy.” However, when they started injecting resin for an invisible repair, cracks began to spread out from the divot in two directions—with the cracks running ahead of the resin—so they quit and said they’d have to replace the windshield. EXCEPT—when they went to order the replacement windshield, they found they were not yet authorized to replace a windshield on the 2019 RDX. 2018, yes—2019, not yet. They suggested I go to the nearest Acura dealer (70 miles away), and warned me that it would involve remounting and calibrating the windshield’s camera.
The dealer said they don’t do glass, but referred me to a glass replacement shop near them that they work with. It took them about 7 days to get the new windshield and clearance from my insurance company. So this morning I got up at 5 AM and drove the distance to the glass shop, and got a new windshield. I have to drive back again tomorrow, this time to the dealer, so they can “recalibrate” the LKAS/ACC camera. They couldn’t do it today because they want to have at least 24 hours between the time of the windshield installation and the recalibration procedure.
Working all this out took 3 calls with the insurance company, 3 calls with the dealer, and 3 or 4 with the glass company. I’m fortunate in that my insurance company says they will pay for all this with little or no deductible—I had some kind of glass coverage in the policy—they pay the glass company directly for the windshield, but I’ll pay the dealer for the calibration, then get reimbursed (I hope). I don’t know the cost of the windshield or installation, I did not see the invoice, but it only took 70 minutes. I’ll find out tomorrow what the “recalibration” costs.

I can relate.
My car has been in the body shop since July 2nd.
The dealer has been having trouble getting parts.
A couple had to be taken from the production line in East Liberty, OH on an 'emergency order' basis.

and one other were certified to re-calibrate the camera. So...it was nice to know that IF I ever need a windshield, they will order the OEM one, install it, and calibrate it all in one stop at their shops.
But, these newer cars are getting to be a "lot more involved" when it comes to repairs, adjustments, etc, etc. The windshields must be really expensive. They are now acoustic glass and thicker than previous ones.
Well, they said they ordered it through the Acura dealer, and it fit ok—I’ll have to look at the markings and see if that tells me anything. I’d be surprised if anyone other than OEM was able to supply a 2019 part so soon, especially as complex (for a windshield) as this one is.

some insurance companies pay for oem windshield only first 2 years. Its good that you checked, they would do anything to pay as little as possible.
So sorry! You may be the first winshield casualty.
Would love to know the $ numbers ‘ as I’m sure, all others would too. If you don’t mind, could you please inquire the cost of the windshield and post? Appreciate your contribution to the forum!
