Reverse Auto Braking

Hello to those that have an RDX Tech does the car automatically brake when reversing if an object is detected and the brakes are not applied? I realize it has the rear cross traffic alert which is an audible sound however would the brakes auto apply if the driver fails to? Thanks

Auto braking only works above a certain speed, anyway. I don't remember exactly but it's somewhere in the range of 12-17 mph. Below that, it cuts off. If you're rolling toward another car or obstacle at 5-10 mph, you may get alarms and warnings but the car will not brake. I'm pretty sure the sensor for it is only in the front but even so, it's unlikely you would ever be going in reverse fast enough to activate it.

That's why it won't bring the car to a dead stop, like they claim on other cars (like Subaru?). It's not an auto-braking system, it a Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS). The manual actually says it's not intended to prevent a collision, it's only intended to "mitigate" the severity. You have to drive the car and bring it to a stop, if necessary. I've gotten the BRAKE warning plenty of times in traffic but I've never noticed the vehicle applying the brakes before I do.

It will auto-brake if you have your adaptive cruise control turned on regardless of speed. I use this sometimes in rush hour. There is no auto-braking in reverse.

I noticed that too (i.e. car will come to a complete halt if necessary when adaptive cruise is on). And that is why I'm surprise car will not stop if it detects an obstacle and cruise is off.

I would not want auto braking to go on while in reverse. The system isn't perfect when alerting incoming vehicles when reversing, and sometimes will be confused in specific scenarios where it would seem like another car is coming when it really isn't (like the parking lot is close to the main highway.) I don't want to have the car stopping at random times when reversing while this happens. It also alerts when you're parked in the corner of a parking lot and another car isn't actually behind you.

Just an observation and something to share:

As is often the case on the two lane blacktop roads in my area, there is room to pass on the right, off the marked road, when someone makes a left.

So, when I did so, at some speed, maybe 50 or so, and crossed the solid line, the RDM activated and I could feel the car brake. I just hit the gas (having read the manual) and kept going. So, RDM will not only tug the wheel, it will apply the brakes, too.

I notice the braking too. I think it can be prevented by turning on the indicator.

I was a passenger in a grand cherokee that auto braked when reversing near some trash cans in a tight alley. It was pretty violent with the brake force. Didn't mind if we got very close or even tapped the cans but it didn't allow that haha

Just turn your blinker on when you cross the lines, RDX auto lane control will not react.

I finally felt it this morning on my way to work. Traffic comes to a dead stop on the parkway. It's abrupt but I have no problem stopping at least a car length from the car in front of me. But the CMBS overreacts, IMO. Even after I took my foot off the brake, the car wouldn't move. Apparently, he brake-hold engaged itself. I never turn that on. I had to hit the gas to get the car moving again, because the guy behind me didn't have as much of a cushion. Plenty of times I've moved up and taken up distance expressly to avoid being hit from behind by a tailgater. Fortunately, I didn't get banged because by the time I figure out what was what, it would have been too late.

Not all these "safety" features are safer in all situations. I wish they'd just let ME drive the damn car.
