RDX Mileage Question - 23 combined or not?

The lease is up on my 21 TLX Technology. It's been a fantastic car. I'm considering buying it or going to an RDX. Right now, an SUV would be a bit more practical. (end up borrowing my wife's SUV more than I'd like to)

Acura appears to be 'all-in' on EVs. The only hybrid hope may be the ADX next year. But if it's built on the Honda ZRX (European) model, it may be smaller than what I'm looking for.

There are some posts about issues with the RDX mileage. On Reddit and other places, people talk of 13-15 mpg. On Fuelly, it looks like most people get about 23 combined. My wife has an RX350 gets about 20/27. I live in the DFW metroplex. My driving is probably right at 50/50. I'm completely fine if it gets somewhere close to the stated mileage. But some of those reports about abysmal mileage have me concerned.

I'm a pretty light footed driver. My days of pushing a car as a sports car are in the rearview mirror...

23 to 24 is about what I get in a relatively rural area of Pennsylvania. That is a lot of trips around 15 to 20 miles (RT) and I'm hampered by one stretch of 45 mph road that is 5 miles and 17 traffic lights. I figure about 1/2 those lights will get me! Once or twice a month I have to take a 150 mile trip to Long Island. Most recently, and for the first time ever I saw 29.2 on the trip indicator. Because of the time of day I encountered very light traffic and averaged about 55 mph. About 100 miles of the journey were on turnpikes where I set the cruise at slightly over 70 mph..

I live in a very dense area and see between 20 and 21.5mpg. My wife gets 1-2mpg more based on her driving style. On the highway we see around 24 but never over 25. I calculate it at the pump using the trip odometer, the onboard mileage calculations on most cars are not accurate.

I get around 16 mpg, but I'm in Los Angeles. On longer highway drives is the only time I get anywhere close to 23-25 mpg.

When I'm in much more suburban environments, I can see myself getting over 20 combined.

It really depends on the environment you're in, imo. If you're cruising around the DFW suburbs with a few stoplights and minimal traffic, the gas mileage should approach or exceed 20. But, if you're in the heart of Dallas with most of your trips being in a good amount of congestion, the RDX will not be particularly fuel efficient and you'll get closer to my numbers.

I get 21-22 mpg in mostly suburban driving (90%) and highway (10%). (AWD)

Traffic in the suburbs is moving most of the time, very rarely get stuck in stop and go.

I think if you have a lot of stop and go traffic, you could easily drop to 15 mpg. But that is going to be true of any car that is not a hybrid.

My overall average over 25K miles/45 months is 20.5mpg. Wish Acura would do a "mid-hybrid" for city MPG and performance - similar to BMW x3 M40I, Lexus RX 500H and Mazda CX 70/90.
  • Best - 27mpg 0n a 1,100 road trip, low wind, flat terrain, regular gas (not premium) and cruise set to 72mph. Typical freeway trips is about 25.5mpg. Wind and terrain have a big effect on the RDX.
  • Worst - 14 mpg, city driving in deep snow, and -5 degrees outside (offset by the goat capabilities of the SHAWD - never got stuck).
  • Summer gas blend in mix driving, averaging 18.8MPG (70/30 mix of city/highway).
  • Tires at 38psi.
  • The turbo and SHAWD loves petrol in stop and go traffic.

Other options out there if you are looking for MPG's. I drove my friends new 2024 Honda CRV Sport Touring Hybrid AWD - she averages 36mpg - its peppy and handles well. Also, recently test drove a Hyundai Tucson Limited Hybrid AWD - super nice, lots of safety features and gets in the low-mid 30's mpg.

I have been in both also, very nice and a lot of bang for the buck.
