Power off sequence

I’m wondering if shutting off the car while it’s still in drive might prove to be problematic. For instance, when I pull into the garage and come to a stop, the engine shuts off. If I put the car in park, the engine restarts only for me to shut it off within 2 seconds. I don’t have issues with the auto start/stop, so I won’t be disabling it.

the benefit to me shutting off the engine while it’s in idle stop mode is that it automatically puts the car in park and applies the parking brake (most times).

thoughts?

That's my routine. Come to a full stop, and press the off button. Never use the P.

this is what I started doing as well, even though I always disable the start/stop.

That's what I have done for 14,000+ miles and 10+ months. Come to stop, push the start/stop button, unbuckle seat belt, exit vehicle.

IT WON'T ROLL.

If you are really concerned, try it with your foot on the brake...and watch the light next to P (on the shift buttons) light up and the Parking brake light come on as well...

This will give you some confidence.

Yeah I asked the same thing here https://acurazine.com/forums/third-g...t-park-983958/ It really is stupid for the car to restart for 2 seconds.

If you can not push on the brake enough to turn it off then you are ok. It's kind of hard to do when pulling into the garage though.

Old ways developed on old technology cars hang on. I always use Park when stopped, supplemented by the parking brake when on even a slight slope. My sequence on a slope is stop, go into neutral, put on the parking brake and then put into park. This seems to keep the force of gravity off the transmission and onto the parking brake. On a level surface, I go directly into park after stopping without the parking brake being deployed. I rarely use the auto start/stop feature, so I don't have the engine restart issue.

if I’m on an incline, I’ll put the weight of the car on the parking brake too using the same methods you described

I've tried pressing the "off" button instead of park when coming home but then it complains about being in accessory mode / wanting more presses to fully shut off.

Is your seatbelt on still? Door still closed?

I'm old fashioned. Or maybe just plain old. I put the car in park, and shut off everything. HVAC, heated seats, etc. Then I shut off the engine. I'd shut off the infotainment system if I could but I can't without opening the door. (I don't understand why the heated seats don't turn off automatically.)

When I pull into the garage, I hit the chocks, keep my foot on the brake and put the car in reverse, then park. That backs the front wheels off the chocks a fraction so there's no stress on the transmission pawl.

I've never been in the habit of using the parking brake in auto transmission cars. In this car, the brake is electrical and I wonder how much power it uses. Generally, I only use it when parking on a slope.

Automatically shifting into P is one of my favorite little features of this car. When i drive other cars now, it feels so primitive having to manually put it into P. Auto P should be standard behavior.

I hear other vehicles having this issue at gas stations and in parking lots all the time. They come to a stop, car turns off, driver puts car into park, car turns on, driver turns car off. It's funny to see. Just press the ignition and let the car auto-park.

I shake my head at the seemingly obvious (and easy to prevent) flaws that the engineers fail to recognize when designing these features.

On some cars, you cannot disable engine idle stop. At least we can.

I hope someone figures out how to turn it off permanently. Someone did it on the F150 but that solution does not apply to the RDX. I have an idea of how to deactivate it but no time to commit to trying.

I think rather than seeking to turn it off permanently (meaning never able to turn on again if permanently means permanently), there should be a setting as to whether or not it is engaged when starting the engine. That way it is there for that monumental traffic jam but not needing to be turned off all the time when starting the engine.
