Car restarts when put in Park

Ok so new owner.

My wife comes home and pulls into the garage (which I'm working in) comes to a stop and the car shuts off and then restarts for a second and shuts off again.

So figuring it out after the auto start stop shuts it off, it restarts it when the P is pushed and then shuts off when the stop button is pushed. How stupid is this? How many starter cycles will this cause? Is this normal or do I have a problem with my car?

I know the workaround it to just shut it off while in D. Doing so does engages the parking brake which means after putting in R she has to either gun the car to move or pull the parking brake off.

That's completely normal, and I agree ... asinine of a design. I've simply gotten into the habit of shutting the car off when parking anyways. Also, I almost always shut off the Auto Stop/Start to begin with. Only time I don't is when I forget. The second it engages, I shut it off once I start rolling again. That being said, I haven't had the parking brake engage when shutting the car off in D.

I think that's working as designed with Auto Idle Stop. As soon as the brake is lifted, AIS (ASS) kicks in and restarts the engine. Here's page 434 of the Owner Manual.

And yep, stupid design. Should know the driver is parking the car.

Yeah especially when the driver pushes the P button.....

Thanks for the answer to making sure it's not just me.

Was cold out today, again. I keep the seat heaters on auto. When I went out, the airbag light verified that the passenger seat was not occupied, but the car heated that seat anyway. Yet another stupidity.

What if the missus decides to tag along for the ride, and only the driver's seat was heated. That will be a fun drive

Mine doesn't put on the parking brake when I switch it off, it just goes to park. I have a 2020 Advance SH-AWD.

I think you will need to enable automatic parking brake to automatically engage the electronic parking brake when the engine is switched off. Pages 492 - 495 of the Owner's Manual. I don't use it personally -- it's confusing as heck setting it up and for sure I won't remember the instructions to turn it on or off.

If the car is smart enough to know if someone is sitting there, and therefore whether to launch an airbag in an accident, it could know whether or not to heat the seat.

you could be pre-heating the seats for the passenger you are picking up

This is as designed and it is how every car in the industry is as well. Most likely due to some sort of regulation. I recently drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee and it had the same "issue".

I think this is mentioned in a similar thread before, but instead of pushing P and getting the engine restarted, you can hit the on/off button to turn off the car directly. The car will shift itself into P and apply parking brake if enabled.

Here are the instructions for enabling the automatic parking brake, from the manual p. 489:

■ Activating and deactivating the automatic parking brake feature

With the power mode is in ON, carry out the following steps to either activate or deactivate the automatic parking brake feature.

1. Put the transmission into (P.
2. Without depressing the brake pedal, press and release the parking brake switch.
u Check that the Parking Brake and Brake System indicator (red) has come on.
3. Press and hold the parking brake switch. When you hear a beeping sound, release the switch and within 3 seconds pull up and hold the switch again.
4. When you hear a sound indicating that the procedure is completed, release the switch.
u Two beeps indicates that the feature has been activated.
u One beep indicates that the feature has been deactivated.
u When you have completed activating the feature, the parking brake will remain applied after you turn off the engine.
u To confirm that the parking brake is applied, check if the Parking Brake and Brake System indicator (red) is on.

If you need to temporarily deactivate the feature for when putting your vehicle
through a conveyor type car wash, you can follow the procedure explained below.

1. Depress the brake pedal and bring the vehicle to a stop.
2. Set the power mode to VEHICLE OFF and then within 2 seconds pull up the parking brake switch.
u Activation and deactivation settings for the feature will not be affected.
u Before temporarily deactivating the feature, make sure to first turn off both

ACC with LSF and the automatic brake hold system.
u To confirm that the parking brake is applied, check if the Parking Brake and Brake System indicator (red) is on.

Often times, I manually set the heated seat level or turn it off. When starting the car through AcuraLink, it will almost always change the setting I left it at the last time I used the car. There's no pattern to it either. Sometimes it sets it to 3 and other times 2, 1, or off. Sometimes it sets it to 3 on a 50°F day and other times 1 on a 20°F day. I keep the passenger seat heater off most of the time. AcuraLink remote start turns it back on. If I'm not on auto, it shouldn't mess with my settings.
