Parking sensor malfunctioning with false alarms

Taking our 2020 into dealer tomorrow for this, but was just wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar issue and possible resolution. I'm skeptical of successful diagnosis, especially as it would be difficult to replicate the issue for them.

The problem we've noticed is that the front parking sensor will randomly activate while driving on the road. During this period of time it will display the visual warning in the instrument panel and also sound the audible alarm similar to when you're parking and getting very close to an object. I've observed that every time this has happened so far, it's actively raining or recently rained such that the car and road are still wet. It has not yet happened when the car is dry. Otherwise, as far as I can tell, the parking sensor is operating as it should if you do actually approach an object at low speed when parking.

Thanks.

Unfortunately what you are experiencing is normal behavior during rainy/snowy weather. On the rare occasions that I experienced the issue I just disable the parking sensor with the on/off switch on the bank of switches left of the steering column.

I experienced this several times (always in clear, dry weather) and managed to get it on video while driving inside of a parking structure in clear weather. Took it to Acura, gave them the link to the video, car returned with the default "unable to duplicate". They wouldn't even discuss any sort of repair or service of any kind - typical of Acura with this gen RDX. I've learned to just ignore all the random things that seem so easy to fix lol... link below:

If you only experience this at speeds below 5 mph (8 kph), and only when it is raining or snowing, I would consider that normal. I assume that they built in the automatic disable feature at 5 mph to prevent the false alarms while driving at normal road speeds.

I used to see this on and off with my 2019. The first time it happened I was a bit unnerved because it was at night and raining and I thought I was not seeing clearly. I pulled into a parking lot and circled a few times only to find it was falsely being trigger. I think this is due to drops of water getting caught in the grill. There have also been instances where a tiny leaf or insect obstructs the sensor. I took it in a couple of times due to these malfunctions, even with a video recording one time, but was told it's normal.

In summary, what OP is experiencing is unfortunately likely normal given the design of the car.

With the MY2022 update, they moved the sensors out of the grill and into the bumper so hopefully this should be less of a concern.

Had this same problem when I had my 19 Aspec. Had it on video and showed the dealer. They determined the harness was the issue and replaced it without giving me any fuss. After that no problems from the front sensors.

Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunately, this does happen even at highway speed so it's quite unusual. Also, we've had the car for 3 1/2 years and first time had these false alarms at all, regardless of weather conditions. Fortunately, it's still under the warranty period.

I just got back from the dealer. I wasn't too hopeful since I can't reproduce the problem for them without it being a rainy day. They told me they hooked up to the car to try and run diagnostics and got back several error codes (unrelated to the parking sensor from what I briefly saw on the printout they showed me). They want me to come back next week when they can give me a loaner car as they'd like to keep the car for a few days and run through testing procedures of different components/electrical system. Nothing else seems strange with the car. Everything is operating just as expected, even the parking sensors do still work as intended when approaching an object at low speed. We've seen no error messages of any kind in the car. So we'll see what their tests show next week.

I'm curious since this happens when it rains, if perhaps moisture is getting into a place it shouldn't, like a module or wiring harness. Hopefully, they figure it out. If nothing else, at least it will be on record as having acted up during the warranty period, but we've got some time yet. Warranty doesn't expire until September.

Thanks everyone.

My 21’ Aspec does this intermittently, and it scares the shit out of me most of the time…

Have seen this one happen on my 21 Tech. Seems to go away with a good "cleaning" of the sensors.
