Maintenance Minder Oil Life Estimate Weirdness
Maintenance Minder Oil Life Estimate Weirdness
Hi folks. Fairly new to the forum.
I had my 2020 RDX SH-AWD Advance into the dealer on March 17 for its first service (A1 at @ 6077 miles). Maintenance minder had been displaying the “Oil Life: 15%” for about a week. Picked up the car and as expected, no Maintenance Minder notice. The other day as I was driving, I scrolled through the MID screens and when it got to the Maintenance Minder screen it showed “Oil Life: 20%” and “B”. I know the “B” indicates the next service will be a B service. What I can’t understand is how the Maintenance Minder thinks I only have 20% oil life remaining after three weeks!
I called the dealer and spoke to my service advisor and his immediate response was that they forgot to reset the Maintenance Minder. I reminded him that the vehicle had been notifying me that the oil was at 15% before I took it in and got no notification when I picked it up so it must have been reset. I have an appointment in two weeks to have them look at it. What I don’t want is to have them just go into the system and reset it again without doing some kind of investigation. I would like to have some understanding of how the Maintenance Minder is reporting 20% already.
My question is: Is there any way they can investigate this and come up with an explanation? Or do we just reset it and hope for the best?
Is it possible they changed the oil and filter and the system readjusted its estimate of oil life upward without a reset? I’ve seen some discussions in here about whether the MM is all algorithm based or if there are actual sensors.
I have checked the oil level and it is fine and appears to be fresh oil.
Any thoughts on what is going on? Anything in particular I should tell them to do when I take it in?
Thanks for any insights.
Ron

Only thought I have is if this looks at various factors to give the % like both miles driven and maximum time between oil changes. Not seeing how it could increase with simple logic. But maybe if it had been limiting due to time between changes and your miles per week increased. This could cause a slight bump in % since you won't hit maximum time between changes which had been limiting your oil life.
Agree they just didn't reset the reminder.

I would just reset it and go on with life. The readings you see on the vehicle display are "rounded" I think as if you go into the Acura Link program they are more precise. After all, this is just a calculated value based on the driving conditions of the vehicle. I have seen them drop from 25% down to 15% in just a few miles, normally after sitting for example. Again, they are just a reminder.

Sounds like a possible issue with the maintenance minder 365-day timer logic. It may have been corrupted.

Thanks for that link, EE4Life. Quite interesting. The 310 days in that document would be about right with the start of the Maintenance Minder "Oil Life 15%" notification from when we purchased the vehicle. The RDX had 10 miles when we purchased and about 6000 when the notification first started. Of course that assumes the days counter started at delivery (4/20) as opposed to date of manufacture (1/20). Do they reset the MM at delivery? However, that still doesn't quite explain why the MM is already showing 20% oil life. If they reset the MM, it should be reading 100%. If they didn't reset it, it should still be notifying me that oil life is 15% (or less).
As suggested by rdevillers, I did check the oil and it is clean and between the marks on the dipstick, so I'm confident it was changed. I will talk to the Service Advisor tomorrow and let him know I am just going to reset the MM.
Thanks for the input from everyone.
