Hood Scratched - What to do?

My hood got scratched pretty bad by a motor cyclist parking.

I have a 2022 RDX Liquid Carbon.

I’m in Chicago and have never been thrilled with the repaint quality at shops here for metallic paint.

How should this best be addressed? I’m bummed!

Yikes!! I’m not a professional detailer, but my guess is that you have the following 2 options:

1.) To really look good, you’re going to have to repaint the hood. I honestly don’t see that being buffed out.

2. Order some factory OEM paint, fill in the scratch, wet sand, and then buff until it looks decent.

As much as I hate having a vehicle repainted too, I would definitely opt for that in this situation.

Either way, good luck!

Did the motorcyclist fall on the hood or the rider?

Hard to tell in the pic the true damage. To me, that is a long, deep scratch which appears to have gone down to the base coat. Way to large and deep for touch up paint. IMO - it has to be prepped & resprayed, as that is the only way to correct it on a new expensive vehicle - where you won't be able to tell it was ever there. Ask you Acura dealer which body/paint shops they use or recommend.

Ouch! That looks pretty bad. My Acura dealer has a paint specialist. I'd try your dealer first. I had some minor swirls on the hood of my new RDX I just purchased. They were able to buff them out and told me if they couldn't buff them out, they could repaint the hood and make it match the rest of the car. I have the same color as yours. Did the motorcyclist have insurance? Sorry to hear of your unfortunate dilemma.

Did this motorcyclist admit fault? I’d try to have his/her insurance pay to repaint it. If you don’t fix it properly, you’ll get slammed on resale value when you trade it or return it at lease end.

Repaint for sure. Cost you like $1000.

Ask the local MB and BMW dealerships which bodyshops they use.

I agree paint shops suck - can't ever match the factory paint job. One option is to look for a salvage hood, which I imagine is not a difficult swap. I'm sure there are plenty of RDX's out there that have been totaled from a rear-end, t-bone, flood, etc. I've seen people part out their accessories on Facebook after an accident, so you might be able to find one there if you're patient.

In the near-term, I'm positive a reputable detailer can make it stand out less with a dark filler and a polish. Shouldn't take them more than an hour, so you're probably looking at around $100.

I'd start trying to buff it out...or at least part of it....Agreed with others that it's a deep scratch and buffing won't be a complete fix

They try Dr Color Chip. Will take time and lots of passes, but is relatively easy to use and does a much better job that traditional pens/brushes/ etc.

Should run you about $70...worth a shot before trying to get it painted and getting the paint to match the rest of the car
