Angry Gear Selector button already peeling off!!!!

My D/S button on my 2019 ASPEC is already peeling off after only 9 months of use, is someone else having this issue...? Is not a "scratch" we have not scratch it by accident, is just peeling off, if you zoom the image you can see different places where the paint is coming off and no signs of a consistent scratch, will this be covered by warranty? I'm very disappointed on this car/brand, I have owned numerous other cars in my life only a Chevy that I had years ago had a similar issue like this, where the lettering will fade easily.

Covered by warranty?

I dunno. But at the dealership I went to, they would say ‘can’t duplicate’ and send you packing.

I'm just trying to find out if there's more out there with the same problem, it might be a cheap print or just my bad luck... either or will fix it myself, no need to tear the whole console apart just to replace the face plate button.. So I guess I'm a do'er thanks to Acura.

This isn't a case of the paint peeling, but a case of the paint wearing off.

Years ago, manufacturers were using this "soft touch" paint on their dash buttons. Cosmetics and sunscreen would often get under the paint because of a minute scratch and would cause the paint to bubble and peel off. MB, VW/Audi and others actually came out with a TSB allowing one repair and warned customers to wash their hands prior to using the buttons.

This is different and I've not heard of similar complaints so it could be a defective button that the dealer may swap out - but - is it worth pulling the console apart and the dealer may tell you that you are outside of the "cosmetic defect" time period.

If it really, truly bothers you, then you could phrase it as a safety defect. If the paint continues to wear, then the driver won't know which button to push.

In the big scheme of things this is pretty minor and if this is what bothers you about the car, then there are serious other issues you're not talking about.

If it were an engraved inlay, as it should be, it would never wear off.

Notice it's only the "S" that's wearing off. I guess the honeymoon's over.

BTW, I'm pretty sure that whole shift button thingy is one assembly.

Switch Assembly, Select (Rewritable) - Acura (54000-TJB-A53)

About $160 at the usual online sources, if your dealer says it's a consumable part, like brake pads or windshield wipers.

Personally, I wouldn't submit a warranty request until close to when your warranty expires. It will allow more users to experience the same problem and for it to become a "known issue" with Acrua and they will be more likely to be resolved it at that point. Also, since it's the transmission indicator you can claim it's a driving hazard as you may not know what mode you are in and could make operating the vehicle dangerous. Basically hype up the risk of driving the car with this manufacturer defect, sometimes bringing up the liability of a failure to the manufacturer will get them to respond.

Every issue that comes up on this forum I eventually experience,,,this will probably become a known issue with time. This is my last Acura/Honda product. Period.
I love the look and comfort of my A Spec and that is about it....

these are not exactly new shifters, they have them in many of their other models, it could very well be just a defect with yours

Similar design of shifter as other Honda/Acura models ( for better or worse ), but it seems to be a unique part number for 3rd-gen RDX and a bit lower cost than some others.

Every $0.10 worth of quality paint counts, when you're shaving costs. Same with infotainment system components. I'll bet the bean counters are practically giddy with all the costs they shaved on this vehicle.

Having Elbonians code the Snapdragon 200 chip (which seems to be the chip and the coders used in our RDXs) sure saved Acura some money.

That's a bummer. It's definitely worth a trip to the dealer. They might replace it just out of goodwill even if they are not obligated to. If not, find out how much it would cost to replace. I wouldn't try to fix it with anything touch-up as it'll probably make it look even worse than just leaving it as is. Do you use any kind of cleaners to clean those controls?

Good call! Mine are backlit, and when I run my thumb nail over the "N", I can feel that the letter is slightly recessed.

Sorry for the late response, I was out of town... I checked last night, mine are backlit buttons like everyone else, now, weird thing is when is on (lit) you can't see the missing paint on the letter, I was thinking it will be noticeable but actually you can't tell the letter is missing paint at all... It's on my list of things to fix on my next dealer service visit!

Will find out on my next oil change and service probably in a couple of months from now, I have a list of things that need to be addressed and hoping they will take care of all of them on one trip to the dealer for next service, will keep you posted regarding the drive button paint issue.

I checked the shifter on my 19 MDX which seems to be the same as the RDX's, and the D/S lettering is indeed raised and likely a raised print of some kind. I am guessing something scratched it. This seems like a very dumb design.

Checked it today, and it definitely feels like it's raised ... as if it's painted on. Which is curious as to how it's also backlit. Either way, because of this very reason, I've always always pushed it with the knuckle on my finger. Less oily ... which is likely what eats away at it. I also rarely hit the P button. When I park, I just shut the car off. If I want the car to remain running, I just open the door and it automatically goes into Park.

Based upon my limited examination, I think the white lettering is recessed relative to the surrounding black plastic.

This makes more sense if the lettering is translucent, and the black plastic is a mask.

But I still don't understand OPs black areas in the white lettering.

Well, that's the question, isn't it?

If a white coating has worn off, I would think the light coming through at night should be brighter, if anything.

But if it's black, WTF?

Calling OP... Beuler? ... Beuler?

What gets me even more is that the D/S shows up perfectly without blemishes when it's backlit. I don't know what sorcery Honda pulled with this gear selector, but I don't like it ...

The letter P on my gear selector is peeling off too. A piece of paint chip off. The paint is definitely raised.

Mine is also peeling off too. The part that is peeling off is brighter than the rest of the letters.
