Franken-Hitch: Custom 2 inch Trailer Hitch

As many of you know, when it comes to hitch options for the 3G RDX, we have 2 choices: Factory 1 1/4" OEM with limited capacity or a 2" Aftermarket from either Curt or Draw-Tite. The latter hangs pretty low under the bumper and the hitch rails are exposed. Based on the previous forums, it seems like the group was split on the best option. I had the 1 1/4" OEM on my 2020 A-Spec and was unhappy with the swaying on my bike rack when loaded. In addition I wanted more capacity and flexibility for other accessories. I decided to cut it up and add a 2" receiver tube to the existing hitch. The process took about three hours including removal of the hitch. The receiver tube was from Curt and was originally 6 inches long. I cut a 1/2" off to shorten it to the correct length. I used VHT (Epoxy) Paint, meant for frames and roll bars to finish it off. This hitch sits higher than the aftermarket hitch and IMO looks more like the factory hitch. It does stick out 1 inch more than the OEM, but I have gotten use to it. There are no issues with the spare tire. I had a 300 pound friend stand on the receiver tube and it did not flex at all. The first picture shows the 1 1/4" OEM before it was cut up. Let me know your thoughts, Enjoy!

Interesting for sure. Not sure which I like better. Pictures of my 2021 RDX with Curt hitch, I do like that the trim on mine doesn't have the cutout for the receiver though..

The main reason I did this was for the hitch to sit higher than the Aftermarket hitch. I have used it several times and it works great! I attached a picture from a different angle once it was cleaned up.
