Extended Warranty
Hi Everyone,
I recently just bought a 2019 RDX with Tech and AWD and the finance guy was trying to sell me an extended warranty (not from acura) for like 1.6k (10years,100K miles). Given some of the stuff ive researched on this forum regarding mainly infotainment and some mechanical, what do people think about the extended warranty on this car? Do most of you guys have extended warranty as well?
Thanks!

Personally, I never buy extended warranties or maintenance plans. They are HUGE profit centers. I keep the money and take the risk myself. It's all about risk management.
If my hot water heater breaks, I can afford to repair or replace it. If my house burns down, I can't afford to rebuild it, so I do have homeowner's insurance.

I hope to keep my car for 10+ years so I did buy one online from HyannisHondaCare.com. Much cheaper than the dealer. I wanted a warranty from Honda/Acura, not a 3rd party company. I have less trust in 3rd parties.
There is so much that can go wrong with cars today because of all of the technology. Also because it was the 1st year of the new generation so perhaps all of the bugs were not out yet.

Our dealer sold us a CNN plan for $2,887. After doing some homework and coming to my senses, I canceled it and purchased Acura Care 8-year/100K/0 Deductible from Hyannis Honda for $1,705.

Yeah im planning on keeping the car for 10+ years as well. So the consensus seems to be if keeping for long term, extended warranty is a must but go through actual honda/acura and not third party services?

You still have until the 4/50 basic expires to decide on purchasing Acura Care Extended warranty. Acura Care wouldn't be used at all anyways until the 4/50k bumper-to-bumper expires if you purchase now.

Same here.. got Acura extended warranty. 3% for an extended warranty on 42K newly designed RDX is worth IMO if you are planning to use it for 8/10 years.

Can't be any more expensive compared to paying $1700-$2400 for Acura Care you can't use for 4 year and Acura is earning interest on your cash. Great thing about Acura Care purchase is it applies for any new or used Acura under the 4/50k limit, can transfer to a new owner, and pro-rated if you cancel. I purchased my 11 MDX Adv/Ent used with 30,000 miles in 2014 and decided to purchase 5yr/120k Acura Care for $2390 at 3 years/10 months into the 4/50k basic warranty.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I think im going to follow everyones advice and avoid the third party warranty and find an acura/honda extended warranty. Would anybody know somewhere that is a great deal for the acura extended warranty? I live in California so unfortunately I cant purchase from Hyannis Honda. It would help alot and I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I purchased my Acura Care from Acura of Peoria, Arizona, back in 2014. My local dealership, Montano Acura, ABQ, had the same price; but, they had to charge sales tax. It would be something to check into if you have to pay sales tax if you purchase from an out of state Acura dealership.

I normally dont buy extended warranties but did for my recent car purchase as I plan to keep the car for 10 yrs....these new cars are full of electronics and $$$ to fix....I would recommend an actual manufacturer warranty as some of the rest can be pretty shady. Glad I bought the extended warranty for our kitchen appliances..already saved me big $$$$...good old made in America Kitchen Aid...lol

Another thing to consider and "rolling the dice" on are future Acura extended warranties? Acura has provide extended warranties for my vehicles on:
- 07-13 MDX 100k ADS magnetic suspension system (Acura Care took care of at 110,000 miles)
- 10-13 MDX +100k 3.7L oil consumption (didn't need)
- 08-12 RDX 100k A/C clutch/compressor (used at 95,000 miles)
Failures I've had between 120,000-165,000 miles that also wouldn't been covered by Acura Care: but, maybe by 3rd party warranty were:
- TSX: P/S pump, P/S Rack, alternator, rear camber kit, passenger front upper control arm,
- RDX: P/S pump, 4 coil packs, i-Vtec oil pressure switch, hairline crack in radiator, alternator, water pump, driver's sun visor, shocks/struts (Eibach lowering springs killed OEM early)
- MDX: nothing (yet)
The out of pocket issues I've had with my 06 TSX and 08 RDX in the last +6 years were still cheaper than the 120,000 mile extended warranty for one vehicle. There is a good chance Acura could do an extended warranty on the info-tainment, 2.0T, and 10AT if issue pop up down the road. Roll of the dice!

I purchased acura care for 1200... I think that was worth it given all the tech in the car and all the problems I had read about the car beforehand, I wasn't intentionally going to buy it there I was going to buy online but this seamed like a good plan.

I got 3 quotes and the lowest was $1705 for the 100k mile plan with $0 deductible.
I'm still procrastinating over whether to buy it.
I've never purchased an extended warranty before and I've always come out way ahead after 8 years.
But you are correct, lots of things that could go wrong with this vehicle. Lots of problems reported, and it's a 1st year model redesign.
I'll make a decision by the end of the month I think.
Good luck with your new car!
