Auto High Beams

When I bought my RDX (2019) the Auto High Beam feature was set and worked fine, obediently going to high beams when there was no traffic, and vice versa. Now, it doesn't. I have read the owners manual (page 192) and followed the instructions to make sure it is activated (pull the lever for at least 30 seconds---green auto-high beam indicator flashes once) ...which it does.
The switch is in 'Auto position...headlights are set to low beam, but the auto high beam indicator never comes on (on the dash---in green--- five beams followed by an A inside a headlight profile). Driving at night, over 25MPH and no wipers running, conditions dark.
Of course I can manually put the high beams on, but...
What am I doing wrong?

While driving at night, pull the lever one time toward you. Pulling it again will disable it. Dumb...because if you use the lever to flash another driver, you may disable the auto high beam function. BTW, the indicator light will only illuminate at night.

^^this. If I have a reason to flash my lights, I’ve gotten into the habit of always doing it twice.

I don’t flash other drivers. Afraid to get shot.

Yep, what others said to activate. What I’ve noticed on more than one occasion is that people will think I have brights on when I don’t! These RDX lights are blinding bright on low!

Yea, when I'm driving one of my cars that are lower to the ground, Acura headlights are unnecessarily bright. I get flashed frequently as well. I hug the shoulder line/right side of the road so as to sort of stay out of the way of other drivers, but it doesn't make that much of a difference. Worst part is, they're aimed so low, the brightness is almost pointless. When I'm driving near my house with no street lights, the light is bright but direct ... not much periphery brightness so I find myself using my high beams more than I do on my other cars.

Thanks to all who responded. I will get it out after dark as soon as I can, and try this 'solution'. Amongst other things, I am a severe migraine sufferer so have been kept bedridden for a few....so, it anyone has a cure for those...feel free to go off topic!

You won’t as long as you flash three times (not two, not four) because then the other car will know you aren’t a canabalistc pedophile deep-state operative on your way to get “pizza.”

Highway road rage by in the fast lane by other driver

Crazy driver thought I have high beam on while driving in the highway, fast lane. That crazy driver went behind my car & turned his high beam directly behind me & followed me over 4 miles. I was so scared. I wished the person is more educated & I wonder if he knows it now. Can I tint my headlights to avoid being accused of having high beam on? I would hate to go through it again. I love my Rdx.

I think you're trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist. There's always going to be angry drivers that do strange and scary things. IMO, the only thing that might be worth doing is making sure the bulbs are leveled correctly at your next service.

Will check the level. Thanks!

The only time I have the lights set for auto bright is for rural low traffic driving when you want to see that deer on the side of the road sooner. Otherwise I toggle the bright to manual, requiring a pull on the lever to engage and then a second pull to set back to manual. There are a lot of cars out there with brighter lights these days shining into your car even on low beams. I clean the inside of my windshield a lot more often now to remove the haze that builds up from the chemicals emitted from the dashboard causing that glare from oncoming cars..

A coupe of weeks ago my map system had a brain seizure and stuck on the address we had just left (after dark), and at the same time the auto high beam thing ceased to work. (Very rural roads) The next day the displayed map was fine but I don't expect to be driving where I can use high beams for a while. I'm afraid this is the start of something bigger.

For older folks, of interest, after I had cataract surgery my night vision was much better and the glare less bothersome. But still, recent vehicles do have over-bright low beams for oncoming traffic. Great for me and my driving, just not the other person.

Well, my wife just had cataract surgery on Tuesday following a retina tear and surgery. I'll pass the good news about night driving on to her....hopefully she will benefit as declining quality of night driving has been one of the many, and accumulating, disappointments of aging!

It ain't perfect but much improved. In regular daytime viewing, the blues and whites in general are much sharper - between surgeries one eye was showing things with a goldish tinge and the other sharp blues and whites. Sunglasses are mandatory. But then, I'm talking post-cataract, not "just" retina tears. I'm going to have to go back and review some of my Photoshop projects re: color.

I've noticed that driving on an empty dark road the low beams emphasize center and right, less on the left in deference to oncoming traffic.

Re: Nav system and entering addresses, aside from casual travel, it's back to Apple CarPlay and their maps, or Google, depending on the mood. We have a 1500 mile trek coming up and there's no way I would use the built-in system.

I am using Apple more and more over Google. I like the way Apple highlights lights and stop signs, and Siri is getting much better at finding what I am looking for.

I still trust Google when there are a lot of different ways to get somewhere through traffic, like driving 95 through DC/Baltimore.

Yes, Google Maps for big cities. It shows me the correct lane to be in, like Indianapolis, and I-44 in St. Louis approaching the Mississippi River. Other times, it gets down to which voice I like better.

In our upcoming 1500-mile trek I don't expect to be testing out the auto-high-beam lights. I really want them to work but something is wrong, per above post.
