Advance Interwoven Wheel

I've been trying to resist posting on this... I like everything about the Advance, except for the wheels! I feel like I might be the only one who feels this way, but I absolutely abhor them. Anyone else feel the same way?

If you read some of the other threads, you'll see that almost everybody dislikes them.

I must say that after seeing these wheels in person, I thought that they were not as bad as I initially thought... OK, they are still not great, but not as horrendous as I once thought they were.... I am just surprised that Acura included this design for the Advance/Elite trim.... these should have been used for the base trim.

They're a bit funky up close, but once you stop staring at them they just blend in.

I guess Acura thought they needed to have different wheels for each trim level, but whatever. It is what it is.

At least they broke away from the "machined and clear coated" trend that makes curb rash nearly impossible to repair.

Agree....bad choice.
They look partially melted.
Didn't Acura use preference testing or focus group????

I agree, one of the worst Acura wheel designs ever. Whoever was the designer, they either smoked too much of the good stuff ...or maybe not enough???

They don't look good and I personally think they look worse in person. But heck, they are only wheels and after awhile you will learn to ignore them. But almost any wheel might have been better.

I never understood why Honda and Acura are so wheel-challenged. I can't really think of a BMW wheel that I thought was bad. In fact they pretty much all look good. What is so hard about it Acura? Just ask a few random people on the street is all you have to do to avoid these mistakes.

I can live with the style of the wheel but not the color [Black Advance] -I'll be looking into getting them painted a bright silver or might have them chromed.

Its an experiment to see if the customer is willing to pay for the advance features even though they really do not like the wheels. I will be trying to trade mine for the tech or tlx wheels.

The 20" accessory wheel should be standard on the Advance, with one of the 19's offered as a no-cost alternate (with 235-series tires, not the A-Spec's 255's).

The amount they want to change wheels/tires is crazy!

I like the lines and geometry of the advance wheels. For me the monochromatic color makes everything melt together. If they had used some color in the valleys between the large and small 'spokes' it would have provided some separation and visual depth. Something like this (pardon the really quick and dirty PhotoShop job):

My thinking on these wheels has changed. I don't think they are awful, and I believe they look better on some colors of car than others.

What I am starting to like about them is that they are kind of understated. Viewed in isolation (looking only at the wheels), they are lame compared to the technology and A-spec wheels. Who would choose the interwoven over those good looking wheels? Viewed on the RDX, however, there is a benefit to the interwoven wheels being uninteresting. They don't draw my attention, and I see and appreciate the lines and curves of the car. The technology and A-spec wheels are such good looking wheels that my eye is drawn to the wheels, and I don't notice much else.

I saw an Elite Platinum (the Canadian Advance) yesterday and the wheels aren't as bad as the photos show BUT they are definitely NOT premium wheels in the same vein that I would see on an X3, a GLC, Q5 etc. In fact, the A-Spec wheels are also not really premium looking either. The 20" diamond cut wheels should have been what the A-Spec and Advance came with and the choice to cheap out on wheels is a bit disappointing. It's not a huge deal as I'll just turn them into the winter wheels and get something better for the summer wheels (I would have to get winter wheels for whichever car I get so the cost diff is not big).

I don't dislike them as strong as others, but they're definitely not great. I just ordered a Black Advanced and would have loved to add the Acura black 19" wheels as an accessory but I can't justify an extra $2,000. Especially on a lease.

I agree about the wheels. I felt the same way about the wheels on my current 2016 Advance (2019 is ordered). I’ll live with them I guess. The one saving feature of the 2019 wheels is they'll be easy to clean.

I am with all of you. Acura does wheels crappy period, save for my 2010 TL-SH-AWD, which I loved. BMW are masters at wheels and Acura should steal their designer. Now I remember people started complaining about the wheels to the (Elite), In Canada like the ones on my 2017, but I rather like them, and always did. The new ones though are not great and disappointing along with Acura cheaping out on Continental tires instead of Michelins.

Im considering getting an Advanced in either the black or gunmetal metallic and am wondering how the 19" Glint Black Alloy wheels might look on them...

Not a fan of the Advance Wheels, Acura always seems to take a step forward and one back with wheels. Maybe they want to design crappy wheels to sell more of the after market wheels.

I was at my dealership’s service department on Friday and while there walked around the showroom. There was a display with wheels for sale. “Only” $2,000 or $1,699 for 4...

i was like, OK, the ‘19 Advance wheels aren’t the best-looking tires I’ve ever seen, but I’m just not going to spent that kind of money to swap them out. They’re not terrible, but yes, they could’ve come up with a nicer design.

In the end, this is just a “meh” thing for me. I’m not losing sleep over it.

You can add the accessory wheels in the configurator. I'm not a fan of gloss black wheels in general, but they look better than the stock Advance wheels even to me.

I’m also in the camp that thought the advance wheels were terrible in pictures (assumed they were the base wheel, and the diamond cut wheels on the advance at the NY auto show would be the stock wheel for that trim. But seeing them now in person, they definitely look better on some color cars than others - good are the silver and modern steel for sure. Haven’t seen a charcoal advance yet, but it might be getting a bit dark. The modern steel advance looks really nice, I don’t even mind the chrome trim so much.

I should be getting my black platinum elite by Thursday according to my dealer (waiting patiently for the phone call). I decided to have the advanced wheels powder coated to black for the heck of it since I dislike them. Either way I'll use them as winter rims and will look to get new summer rims next year. Will post photos hopefully in the next week or two on how they turn out!

I'm not a fan of my Advanced wheels, but I'm getting used to them. There is a set of Tech wheels on ebay, $200/each, wouldn't have to switch the tires. On another thread I read the diamond cut wheels for the TLX 19" will fit, not sure if the tires are the same. If you go with the 20s you need new tires. I'm sure within a few months there will be nice aftermarkets available.

Will they? Serious question, because even though the lug patterns might be the same, the offsets need to be reasonably similar. I'm sure somebody here knows what the TLX's offset is.

Powder coating is quite reasonable. It should fall somewhere in the $60 to $100 per wheel range. I recently paid $80/wheel for 20", which included acid bath prep.

Another vote for (rather, against) Advance wheel styling. I have no idea how that design flows with rest of the sharper, edgier, and precision performance concept. Maybe the designer is related to Ikeda.

Totally agree with you. I'm not a fan of black or 20" (I have them on my Benz now and regretted from day one when I got them) . But this do look so much better than the Advance stock.

What color is this? I could never tell Gunmetal metallic or modern steel (which was the only ones available on the lot)

Every time I saw this post title I thought you were referring to the steering wheel... I put down a deposit today for my Advance. Even with the offered 15% off for the glint black wheels its more than I want to spend to get rid of something I can probably live with.

Somebody from Owing's Mills, MD has listed Interwoven takeoffs on eBay for $995. Looks like TPMS sensors are missing. I'd be surprised if they sell.

I've never done powder coating before. What finish of black rims would you guys choose on a majestic black pearl vehicle: matte, satin/semi-gloss, or high gloss?

A matter of personal preference, of course, but I prefer matte. Matte doesn't show dust or water spots like high gloss, and you don't need to worry as much about scratches. Of course, you might want to try to match the car's finish.

I put matte black wheels on my wife's Q5, and after 85k miles they still looked like new. I used to clean them regularly with a fender brush. This is what they looked like when I listed them on Craig's list.

The wheels are one of the first things my wife wanted changed on our new Advanced in Gunmetal metallic. I think in the future I will buy a set of black wheels for it but after looking at them more and more they really aren't that bad. The light gray color takes away from it a little vice if they were an aluminum color. I just can't see spending the extra $2000 to get them black. For way less I'll pick a wheel of my choosing and use the stock ones for snow tires in the future.

^^^^ This. Painted wheels are much better than machined and clear-coated wheels for winter.

Friends don't let friends drive black wheels while imbibing road salt.

Here, I fixed it for you.

(Obviously I'm not a fan of black wheels - or blacked out or de-chromed cars either. But that's just my taste in cars, yours may be different and just as valid.)

Same.. I don't mind the graphite look on some wheels and loved the pewter color of the '12 TL Advance wheel but not blacked out.

They've been reduced to $550 so they're only half as ugly as they were at $995.
