Acura Care Service Contract

I plan to keep my New RDX for 10 years or more if all goes well. I only drive 7000 miles a year. I am thinking of buying a D80 (8 year 100,000 mile) Acura Care Service Contract. It will cover years 5-8 and cost me $1755. There is a lot that can go wrong on this very high tech car and it is the first year of generation three so I am sure there are more bugs than in future years of the same generation. Please give me your thoughts as to whether it is wise to buy this contract. Needless to say I would rather not spend the money, but if I do not buy the contract I fear in the long run I will kick myself. Thanks in advance.

ps- I am coming off of a 2011 BMW 335xi which cost me $9000 for years 5-8. I only had 49,000 miles on it when I got rid of the car.

If you truly plan to keep it that long, then I would say YES...with all the electronics alone it may prove itself out. If you can afford it, then buy it for the peace of mind.

You will hear people say these contracts are big money makers for the manufacture and not worth it. Others compare them to insurance - something you may never use but it makes you feel better to have just in case something goes wrong. I’ve seen these contracts pay for themselves and then some and I’ve seen these contracts be a complete waste of money. You just won’t know until the day comes that you either need it or you sell the car without using it.

If you buy it I would try and get the plan that most closely matches your expected mileage or length of ownership (or how ever long it will be financed) and of course buy online from one of the two dealerships who give the best prices.

^^^exactly...Hyannis has the best prices that I could find and that's where I bought both contracts for my two Honda Accords. They sell both Honda and Acura plans.

I priced them both and Hyannis was a cheaper alternative.

How many cars have you actually kept for 10 years, and would you have a problem owning an obsolete car?

I agree with buying online and not through the dealer. Hyannis has a great reputation for value. After your BMW repair expenses, I can see why you want it. Just remember, the chances of you using the warranty is probably 5%. That said, I would buy it if I were in your shoes. The relatively small cost of an Acura 10 year warranty is worth the peace of mind of having a capped expense.

I test drove a Mercedes GLC 300 today. Back in the salesman's cube was the cost of extended warranties. It showed the asking price for the GLC at $5k for their 10 year 100k warranty. I'm thinking, that might be a bargain!

Is it possible to buy these plans when one is closer to the expiration of the original factory warranty? If so, I would defer the decision until then, even if it were to be a bit more expensive to do so.

I've never owned an obsolete car and I keep them forever. My oldest is a 1993 Ford Ranger that starts and runs perfectly. It keeps me warm or cool as desired and it goes from point A to point B just as quickly as my 2018 RDX. To me, all the high-tech features on new cars are nothing but fluff that add little or nothing to functionality.

Then why did you buy the 2018 if you feel that way?

Because I wanted a new vehicle for better reliability on long trips and a new and nicer interior. I certainly didn't buy it for the electronics. If I could've bought a new 3rd generation Toyota 4-Runner in 2018 I would have.

Thanks. You just convinced me to D80 also. We drive about the same. I purchased one at CarMax for our daughters used Mazda CX7 for about $1200 for 5 years...used about $5000 or more for new Turbo, Transfer Case, Oil Cooler and so on.

Double check but in the past when I traded in a vehicle, I got money back on the remaining contract!

It was well worth it on the Acuras.

That is correct...if you get rid of a vehicle before the contract expires AND you have never filed a claim, you get a prorated amount back.

Does it depend on what state you're in? I'm in CA. I've seen some contracts where, if the buyer makes a claim, then the prorated amount is reduced by the amount of the claim, and if there is a positive balance, the buyer would get it back.

CA is a royally screwed up state so everything is different in CA. All warranties also have a disclaimer that they may cause cancer.....

While I agree that CA has some issues, isn't it FL where you can't purchase a warranty from an on-line, out of state entity like Hyannis? I live in IL, so my stones are soft.

I lived in CA and couldn't wait to get out so I am saying this from first hand experience. They are one of the few states in the nation with the highest rate of folks moving to other areas of the country. Outbound moves far outweigh those moving in for some very good reasons. Now back on topic

And you can buy a warranty out of state if you you live in FL if you get creative.....

You can buy the warranty later, but the price would be very different.

That is my understanding.

The cost of warranties go up slightly each year, typically, so it will be more expensive but by how much no one knows. Subaru just jacked up their cost back in August by $200 per plan so it could be a $20 YOY increase or much more...if you have the funds and know you want it then I highly recommend to buy it now and move on.

I thought about going the "don't pay it until you need it" route, but decided to buy the peace of mind and save myself from potential future hassles, especially since my balance was very low after trade-in and cash down.

Ended up getting the no-dedutible D82 (8 years, 120,000), maintenance plan, and tire warranty.

They matched Hyannis' quote of $1,995.00 for the D82 (their original quote was exorbitant, so it was to their everlasting credit that they worked with me and did the match).
