Road trip issues

2016 MDX Sh-AWD Advance/Entertainment 55K miles

Recently I've driven this car on 2 road trips that required driving 1K+ miles each. Both times I had an issue.

During trip 1, "Emissions System Problem" warning popped up. It wasn't due to the loosened gas cap. At the end of the trip when I got close to home, it disappeared. I had this issue once in 2017 which the dealer corrected.
During trip 2, suddenly "some driver assist systems cannot operate:radar obstracted" message popped up. I rely on adaptive cruise control a lot on rural highway so this was a big problem.Car was clear of any obstruction too. Again toward the latter part of the trip, this warning disappeared and it started working fine again.

I'll be taking another trip soon and am feeling pretty nervous what may go wrong next. I defintely would not recommend this model to anyone, not to mention high regular maintenance costs.

Did you go through a lot of rain or snow that could have confused or obstructed the systems?

Regarding the adaptive cruise control, if the sun is just at the right angle in the sky - early morning/late afternoon, it will interfere with the sensor and disable the system. Had that happen a n umber of times in my old Infiniti G37.

If you read the online owners manual it outlines a whole series of conditions that interfere with the proper operation of the various driver aids on the mdx such as blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, lane departure mitigation, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control with low speed follow, collision mitigation braking system, etc.

Just because a message pops up that a feature has been disabled for the time being due to certain conditions doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem that needs to be fixed. For safety purposes if it can't get a good reading it might make a mistake and become a safety issue. So instead of operating "blind" it disables the features rather than have them cause an accident due to inaccurate or incomplete data or sensor readings.

Go to the dealer and have them investigate if there are any problems. Nothing you've described so far is something that was defective and required repairs.

So hold off on making dispersions as to the reliability of the MDX as a whole as even if you have a defective part most people do not (or at least haven't reported issues). The 2018 model has great actual reliability ratings so far in consumer reports which is a continued improvement from 2016 and 2017. I'd expect the 2019 to be even better.

It's not designed to work in bad weather, including rain. And then if it stops raining and you still have rain drops/water stains on the windshield, that will cause some issues too (not so much with CMBS, but more so with LDW/LKAS/RDM because it uses visual detection for the lane lines). The manual has a disclaimer for such.

The emissions system problem one is not really possible to diagnose from a forum. Our error code system is all tied in together, so it tends to set multiple warnings off. BUT, that being said, if it was exclusively the emissions system problem, I recommend you check for a P0420 code using an OBD reader. Our cars have a TSB for that issue.

So the OP doesn’t even really know if there’s a real “problem” or if the system was disabled and working as intended but he/she definitely doesn’t recommend this model?

This is the problem with all forums...just a place for the uninformed to complain...often about things that aren’t real problems and/or minor problems. It’s just not helpful to any discussion.

OP...all cars from every manufacture have the possibility of minor issues. If you’re expecting “perfection” from a car you have unrealistic expectations. Before you say you owned whatever car and it never had a problem remember lots of MDX owners will owner their cars for years and never have a problem. Perspective....
