East Coaster taking a trip out west - seeking LA-SF road trip advice

whats up everyone?

as the title states im heading out to LA next sunday to visit some friends out there. i also have a good friend in SF so i figured what better way to see the west coast than a nice road trip from LA to SF.

now ive been doing some research online to see what the best way to make this road trip happen is. it looks like the fastest but the most boring is taking the 5 but im here to see the views and drive the awesome roads. i hear that its nice to drive certain points of the coast like big sur and hearst castle.

oh, and a major factor is that i want to do this drive in no more than 10-12 hours so juggling efficiency and enjoyment. if its absolutely worth it to stay somewhere along the way or take longer id be open to it.

any suggestions and input are welcomed and appreciated!

if you really want to see the beaches while you drive up, take highway 1. it will take you a bit longer then 5, but its pretty nice if you want to stop at some beaches.

Highway 5 is dirty all around through out the whole route haha

If you want a nice scenic route take the 101 north from LA to SF. Its a long ass ride maybe about 10 hours but its worth it. And if you end up taking the fastest way which is the 5 all the way up be careful after you pass the grapevine. For some reason cops give you tickets for going 127mph. Go figure huh.

I agree, the 101 is nice, but it's quite a bit longer than using the 5 since the 101 zig zags alot. I also agree about the cops...they'll pull you over and ticket you if you speed in that area, regardless of your reason or who you are. They tag you for the full speed (they won't cut you a break) so that they can get as much money out of you as possible. Just google "california 100 mph ticket" or something like that, and you'll see all of the threads reference Kern County or Central Cali. It's like how that county makes money, like how the cops in Bell impound cars to fund the high salaries of Bell officials like Rizzo. They need signs there to say not to exceed 65 mph or they won't show any mercy.
