See, Im guessing at least until 2022 or possibly 2023 the current motors will still be used. The basic car has been pushed back several times due to numerous issues. I would at this time be really scared Acura is having some major problems, thats why all the delays.
Towing is up to 5K pounds on current and previous gen. I find it hard to believe a 2.0T can do that efficiently, the RDX with the 2.0T can only tow 1K. The MDX needs the V6.

On most cars, towing is typically a function of the chassis, transmission, and brakes, and not so much the motor. Case in point, the old 2G RDX with the same motor as the current MDX had a towing capacity of just 1500lb. The FWD MDX is 3500lb vs the 5000lb for the SHAWD, all with the same motor. Considering that the GLE350 with it's 2.0T engine (which mind you it makes less power and torque than the 2.0T going into the MDX) is able to tow up to 7700lb, I'm confident that the MDX will be able to muster 5000lb like the old one.
I never ever got over 22 mpg in my 08 RDX with the 2.3T in city or hwy driving (17-19.5 mpg combined is the norm). I was always in turbo boost living at +5000 feet and posted hwy speeds of 75-80 mph out west. My 3.7L 11 MDX at 500-600 lbs more and built like a brick on wheels had higher hwy mpgs compared to my sleeker/smaller 08 RDX. You might use the same amount or even save gas with the 3.0T compared to the 2.0T in the MDX depending on driving conditions. I would love for Acura to have engine power upgrades with the different trim levels. The easiest way would be with 2.0T or 3.0T turbo engines; but, the 3.5L DI is still a outstanding powerplant for a base MDX.
I previously owned an 08 Volvo XC90 and I chose the V8 over the base I6. The 6 was rated at 14/20 mpg and the V8 at 13/19, abysmal I know. But I was consistently able to get 21mpg at 80 on highway trips because the engine didn't have to work hard to keep the car going at those speeds.
Mind you the EPA test cycle is generous in the highway numbers because they run the test with speeds around 60mph. They then adjust the numbers with a high speed test where they get the test cars up to 80, but only for 45 seconds.

Makes sense to delay the new MDX until Feb/21 because of how uncertain the world economy will be, USA election outcome, and how the COVID-19 pandemic will play out. I think it will kill the MDXs sales if the 2.0T is the base engine and you can only get the 3.0T in the Type-S for +$65,000.

There is NO WAY the new MDX would be ready for December delivery, even February delivery is questionable. They haven't even officially unveiled the new MDX to the public yet, and they always do that several months before announcing when it will go on sale. I would venture to guess they'll unveil the new MDX around December, likely to go on sale in late winter, early spring 2021.
I would bet they'll use the same motor that's in the new RDX in the new MDX. Most manufacturers now are going to a turbo 4 cylinder as their base engine with a turbo 6 for their "sporty" options. Fuel economy would be close to the same as the 3.5L in the 2020 MDX, but might have more torque with the turbo. The turbo 4's are cheaper then the 6 cylinder and that allows them to cram more features in for the same price and/or higher profit margin compared to the 6.

The 2020 MDX is selling quite well especially considering the Covid situation (5,000 sales monthly) so no need to rush the car especially since the 2021 TLX was delayed and just now in production.
I agree late winter/spring 2021 likely when we will see it in production.

That would mean the relabeled 2022 MDX will have a very long production run of +18 months. We really have to look at the manufacture date in the used market for basic warranty coverage and the usual TSB bugs that were or were not applied depending on production date.

I didn't say Feb was impossible, only questionable. Acura unveiled the new TLX on 5/28, and it will begin arriving in dealerships 4 months later on 9/28. So they unveiled it 4 months prior to it going on sale as they have to ramp up production etc. They haven't even unveiled the new MDX yet, so to your point about December that's what I was saying wouldn't happen. December is only 3 months away and they haven't unveiled it yet and thus haven't started production yet, so no way that's happening.
If they want to have in dealers in Feb, then if they follow a similar 4 month timeframe as the TLX that would mean they'd need to unveil the new MDX sometime in October. Which is certainly possible. I just didn't fully understand the rush as demand I assume would be on the light side due to Feb being right in the middle of peak Flu and Covid season. But it's certainly possible as they could introduce any day now, or several months from now. No way of knowing.

I believe they will introduce the new MDX as soon as the TLX reviews are out and they hype cools down. So, October seems very reasonable the reveal date.
