Sport Hybrid-Clunk when going from Park to Reverse
Sometimes on my Hybrid MDX when I go from Park to Reverse, I hear a clunk. Is that normal? In all cases the car is on a flat surface with no incline.
Of course, I have my foot on the brake pedal when doing so.
In the Auto Brake post I wrote a few days ago, another user mentioned what causes it and how to avoid it.
I don’t know what else I can do other than pressing the brake pedal and switching from P to R.
Of course, I have my foot on the brake pedal when doing so.

Open the hood and have some one take a look at the engine and if there's extra play/movement when you do so. clunks when shifting gears are typically indicative of a failing engine motor mount.

I too get that clunking noise when going from P to R, but only when parked on an incline ... even a small incline. To avoid that noise, I will put the car in neutral, engage the emergency brakes then put the car in P.

How would I have known that?

My 19 hybrid does the same and clunks into reverse only on inclines. I got into the habit of always using the parking brake on any incline, no matter how slight, and use the Brake/Hold feature. Seems to reduce the clunk (for now).

My 2018 makes the same noise going into Reverse, I don't know if its normal or not but I'd expect it from a dual clutch.

***UPDATE***
The Acura service manger said it sounded like normal operation for the 7DCT to clunk into reverse. He said to wait until 1st service and they can take a look at it. It might be a while for my 1st service since I only have 2500 miles since mid-March.

I am taking my 2020 MDX into the dealer on Tuesday to have the fog lights installed and I inquire about the reverse clunk.

I couldn’t get a hold of the service manager, but spoke with the sales manger that handled my purchase and the guy told me that his MDX also clunks when he shifts into Reverse! He bought it was normal but was going to ask...

I have found a fool proof way to prevent the clunk when shifting to reverse. When I park on an incline while still in Drive and fully stopped I set the parking brake. After the parking brake is set I shut off the engine while still in Drive and the MDX will automatically shift it into Park. It works every time with absolutely no clunk!

100% normal.

google parking pawl clunk and you'll have all the info you need. Dual clutch transmissions to tend to move a bit after parking to engage the pawl. My old VW would roll back almost a foot on some driveways!
