MDX Caught Fire While Parked
#85
Exactly. As far as I know, no cause for the fire was found and no other MDXs have caught fire.
Unfortunately the "newer" model has the "older" software that can't be updated. The "newer" model's remote start only has a range of 20 feet, while the "older" model could be started from 200 feet away...
Yeah, five weeks driving a rental version GMC Terrain was not much fun...

On the positive side, you did get the newer 2015 Advance trim model, versus the destroyed more spartan 2014 Tech trim model.
You now have a lot more gadgets to play around with.

Engine fire...
A few months ago I just bought a '16 RDX. From what I've read so far in this thread, the cause of the fire in the '14 MDX so far is undetermined. I would suspect a gas leak rather than hydraulic fluid. Regardless, I'm thinking this is a very rare occurrence that probably ALL car models from time to time.
Yes, it would have been awful if the car was parked in a garage attached to a home.
This occurrence may not happen again with an Acura for several years so I'm not concerned. Unless it happened in a serious accident, any passengers would have had plenty of time to exit the car. So do lose any sleep over this .

Dried Leaves
I keep looking at the dried leaves and keep wondering if maybe the wind blew leaves up on the catalytic converter and it caught fire?
He mentioned something about pulling a boat, was that with the MDX? IF so, that would get the Catalytic Converter pretty hot, right? Even if it were only a 5 minute trip.
I hope he keeps us updated, I'm a bit worried, we park all of our Acura's in the garages in our house

Leak from the power steering system more than likely.... this was a concern on the 2004-2008TL and acura issued a TSB/Recall for it with a fix.

Call the fire marshal and get the contact info for the investigator who looked at this. Forward that information to Acura Corporate in a registered letter.
File a report with the feds at safercar.gov or with the Canadian authorities if in Canada.
If it was a vehicle problem then Acura needs to take care of it. If it was a maintenance problem then it may be a shared responsibility.

My 2014 Acura MDX caught fire too last night OMG
My 2014 Acura MDX caught fire last night.
we only have 15000 miles on it. bought it brand new.
the car was parked and shut off.
My wife and kids step off the car and noticed that lot of smoke start coming out....
Luckily they are fine.
OMG, what would have happened if you had this parked in a garage?

Please help, an mdx parked in my driveway also spontaneously combusted
Hi RGR and fellow members, I desparately need advice on what to do. A neighbor who rents my driveway for their car had a new MDX leased in 2017 November that was parked in my driveway and it spontaneously combusted into flames, the front engine area. The fire thank god did not catch my house on fire, but there are smoke damage and some burnt bricks. The fire dept came and broken down the front doors and everything bc the car was parked less than 10 feet away from the house. The neighbor is trying to blame me for his car spontaneously combusting. I Google and found out that acura mdx had a recall. I wanted to know how and what steps you took to get this investigated to find out what caused the fire and if it was Acura defect. Any guidance greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Lilin,
I would expect the fire department and car insurance company to investigate the cause of the fire. If spontaneous then I believe the car insurance company will fix your house and the car insurance company would likely pursue reimbursement from Acura. If the fire was arson then you'd likely have to use your homeowners insurance to fix your house.

2003 MDX cat caught fire
Was just on a road trip in my 2003 and smoke was pouring out under car, pulled over and found flames coming from cat, luckily I had a case of water and a large coffee to put it out. Got wifr and kids out of car and was able to put out. Found tranny or ps fluid all over engine and back door. Was able to go to Mart store and clean engine in parking lot and drive 2 hrs home.
is there any recalls on this..

Thanks for your input
I'm trying to find out what issue is, can't find any leaks, not sure where fluid came from. And if you read threads it seems to still be a issue with the MDX. So mind yours unless you got input that will help.

I had the same issue last week. I parked my 2012 mdx and when I turned it off it caught on fire. I was just wondering if you received any answers as to why this could have happened. I'm not getting much info.
thank you

Unfortunately the fire marshal said the cause is undetermined so did the insurance company (after very little basically no investigation) the insurance company has the resources to investigate further but are refusing to do so. Acura told me to deal with the insurance company and yes I did file a complaint with NHTSA but havent heard a response yet. Meanwhile I'm stuck with a car that caught on fire, no fault if my own and have to find a new one.

The insurance company doesn't really care unless it would be clear that it is a manufacturer's defect. You won't "hear anything" from NHTSA. If they get enough complaints then they could launch an investigation - but that won't do you any good in the near future. In general, it takes a significant amount of complaints or an injury to trigger an investigation.
You also provide no information in your complaint to NHTSA. All you said was "AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE, I PARKED IT, TURNED IT OFF AND IT CAUGHT ON FIRE."

I provided the information I was given which was barely nothing. That's the reason I posted on this thread, to get help and advice. I have never had this happen before so forgive me for not knowing what to do, or even who I will hear back from or not. Iffolks can respond only with helpful threads that would be greatly appreciated.

There is one other complaint to NHTSA regarding a fire and that was traced to - and fixed with - an alternator.

My Wife Was driving at the time with our two year old in the back seat and she saw white smoke and escalated quickly to actual fire! Even the police was unable to put it down with extinguisher! Then fire department came

Right Front Of Car!
What the pictures show is the fire was on the front RIGHT side of the car.. The Battery is on the Left side of the car, so it seems to rule out the battery.. The right front has the reservoir for the wipers, that is not an issue, and the ABS system.. Their is not any major electrical boxes or relays in this location..
So if we focus on the ABS system could this cause a fire? It is all sealed in a aluminum box but does have Smart Electronics built in and is computer controlled.. I am No Expert on the ABS system, but wanted to toss this out as after almost 6 years we know that it does happen, but no one knows why??
OH!! I did a search and look what came up!!!

Hi there! I'm hoping to reach you. My 2015 Acura MDX started on fire on Sunday after driving about 6 miles. No previous issues. Trying to figure out how to work with Acura to investigate etc and hopeful I might be able to connect by message with you. Grateful.
