Hey all. I've been on acurazine back when I had my 2001 cl type s, but that was more than a decade ago. I'm in the market for a midsize SUV and my local dealer still has 3 leftover 17 SHawd advance mdxs. With 2019s around the corner and still plenty of 18s on the lot, at this point, what would be a fair price to pay? I'm in FL.

I'll admit, the new Subaru Ascent is my leading candidate but since it's a new release, they're not going to be discounted off MSRP for couple more months. If I can get a great deal on a leftover MDX SHawd advance, I'll gladly pull the trigger despite the stories regarding the 9spd tranny.

Any input would be appreciated!

 

Subaru Ascent uses a CVT. If you're satisfied with that then you could pretty much buy a potato as your daily driver, and be happy.

And I stand by my post. If you find the Subaru CVT acceptable then you simply don't care much about how a vehicle drives. That's fine... Plenty of people view cars as appliances to get them from A to B. Just look how many Toyota Camry/Corolla/Priuses are on the road. Your own post indicates that you care more about getting something cheap than the vehicle you "like" so why bother with a MDX? Just go buy the cheapest car you can find, because you don't seem to care how they drive and price is your #1 concern.

You can continue to hate me, if you like... But this is my genuine opinion, based on what you've posted.

 

Both cars have their flaws. The zf 9 spd is notorious. On the flip side, every reviewer of the new cvt in the Ascent has had the same hesitation and doubt as you, and they have all been unanimous in saying in that if you weren't told it was a cvt, you wouldn't know. They've all been positive. That can't be said about the zf.

Being "cheap" as you say say, is different from looking for the best value. Thanks for the threadjack though!

 

Wasn't the ZF updated?? I'd suggest test driving one to get an idea on how it behaves rather than relying solely on the internet. If you still don't like it, give the Sport Hybrid a shot as the 7 speed DCT is excellent in my opinion.

 

Yes, and to put the ZF into the same category as a CVT is just ignorant, imo.

 

i did not intend on sparking a cvt vs. ZF debate nor a mdx vs ascent debate. i've driven both vehicles. both vehicles have their advantages and disadvantages.

merely looking for some updated input as far as pricing goes since the "2017 prices paid" thread hasn't had any recent activity in a while.

 

I've owned a Accord Sport w/CVT and boy did I regret purchasing it. Off the line performance was decent but once you reach red line the joy ends there. The CVT is supposed to keep you in the best power band, sadly it doesn't. The drone is horrible as well! I'd say go and drive both cars and see how you feel, both are AWD so they may drive similar.

The driving dynamics of the MDX as a 6-7 passenger SUV is best in the market for its price, example I almost pulled the trigger on a Lexus RX350 F-Sport AWD since my wife wanted to stick with the Lexus brand but I couldn't do it. The F-Sport package did little to improve the driving dynamics and the AWD system wasn't worth the $60k price tag. The Lexus interior is light years ahead of the MDX but driving dynamics was on top of my list.

Try searching for a 17 MDX Hybrid, the twin clutch, adjustable shocks and hybrid motors are worth the extra cost.
