Foolish design decision....

grrr, my 2017 MDX Advanced has the exhaust exiting through chrome tips embedded in the back bumper. I recently noticed that
the chrome tips were getting nasty. I tried some Turtle Chrome polish but there is still a slight tarnished look to the tips.

What is the best way to restore the tips to their former glory?

My RDX had the exhausts exit hidden from view. This seems a more reasonable thing to do...

Let's see a pic of the tarnish to determine best course of action!

So you’re angry the exhaust tips work? Most people have the opposite complaint on vehicles that have fake exhausts.

Mine clean off with basic detailer spray. How many miles and what are the conditions you drive in (snow and salt or dry southwest)?

I was behind a new VW Atlas this morning and noticed the exhaust tips in the bumper are fake. The real exhaust has turn down tips behind the bumper like the RDX.

That would bother me to no end. I'm fine with the RDX exhaust (and pre-facelift 3rd gen MDX) because they're not trying to be something they're not. But if you're going to have visible exhaust tips, then they should be functional.

This X1000. I don’t understand what the hell this fake exhaust trend is and where it came from. Even audi is copying it!! Like why?!?

OP . . . . . My experience with Mothers products has been good. They seem to do a good job on restoring the shine and removing contaminates.

I'm tell'n ya, buy a tube of Flitz and you'll see that it takes the carbon of the pipes with just a drop or two on a rag in 2 seconds. Great stuff to have around for the right purpose. In this case, polishing stainless.

Flitz seems to to the job...

I could not find the tube version of Flitz after a brief search but did find the liquid.

The liquid did the job but I would like to find the tube version ( I seem to remember that a long time ago ( 50+ years)
I used a paste version.

Thanks all

Did you try Amazon or even Walmart.com?

Cars with hidden exhaust tips look castrated to me. Cars that pretend to be sporty like Acura does, must have visible tips.

The 17 MDX being a rich GDI will always leave soot on the exhaust. You can clean it but it will always come back.

At first I was kind of peeved that my 2014 didn't have dual mufflers like my 2006, but I have to admit, the clean look of the back bumper has grown on me, and potentially, replacing the mufflers will be 1/2 as expensive on the 2014 than the 2006 if/when the time comes.

The VW Atlas...omfg...that is the dumbest design thing I've seen.

My local Acura dealer does oil changes for $43 and they wash the car for me when I'm done, hard to beat that so that's where my TLX goes. OTOH I have an s2000 I track which I personally change the oil with my choice of oil I spent far too much time determining what is best.

Point is, dealers canb have their use as do specialty oils if they make you happy.

Smile Then MANY manufacturers are fools!!

In case you haven't noticed....MANY cars and SUV"s from most manufacturers are using the exact same exhaust design....with of course some shapes a little different.....but, the same concept. It's everywhere.
Yes, soot will build up. I clean often and wax. What's often? Maybe every fill up. Mine stay nice. The design concept, for me, is much better than when the 2 exhaust outlets were hidden under the rear valance. Same as
on the RDX's. Now the new RDX has the same concept, except the A-Spec version, which has large 4" round outlets. They too get "dirty" and need to be cleaned periodically. Looks good though....IMHO!

Is it actual metal tips? If so, you can use an ultra fine steel wool to polish them up. Use like a 000 or 0000 fine steel wool. Just ended up polishing up the tips on my friends GTI. He was shocked how nice they came out. Took about 2 minutes per tip
