2016 MDX Not Crank Battery OK!

Hi,

Yesterday while doing a "red" traffic light, the MDX activated the start/stop option. When the traffic light changed the MDX did not want to turn on !! that's where the nightmare began !! I quickly thought that the battery died, I looked for my battery booster and when I connected it, it indicated that the battery was good. I was several times trying to start, but it did not do anything. The panel and all the accessories worked fine! Then, I called a road service to go to a auto service center. After arriving at the place the MDX starting normal!!!!!. They checked the battery and the results were 12.64V. The mileage for the MDX is 87,574. Has this happened to someone? Will it be the useful life of a starter?

voltage is only one aspect of the battery's health. How old is it? if its >3 years old, may be time for a replacement.

If this was a no crank situation your choices are battery, cables, or starter. You already Saif battery was good. Did you check/clean the terminals and cable ends? Last is starter. It's not uncommon for electric motors to get dead spots on the armature. A good shop can easily test it for you.

12.6 V is a pretty dead battery. Full charge is around 13.2V, 12.6 is down to about 50% SOC. And if so when the starter solenoid was engaged battery voltage may have dropped below the cutout from the high current draw. Only real way to check the battery is to do a load test and monitor the voltage. Also if they checked the voltage on the battery terminal and you have corroded connectors, the drop across the connectors under load could easily be enough to not start the car. The fact that the jumper indicated a "good" battery indicates to me that you had corroded connectors or a battery with high internal resistance. With no load it will indicate "good" with any load it's dead. Trouble is when the battery is almost gone, or corroded connections, often a slight battery boost, or hooking jumpers to the battery will temporarily restore the battery and connectors ability to start the car. Then you think your ok. but your not.

If this is the original battery, likely it is on it's last legs. yes, some will go 10 years or more, I've had that happen on more recent cars, but non have start stop and we live in a mild climate not real hot in the summer and not real cold in the winter.

The engine start/stop feature really takes a toll on the starter.

Not necessarily. This has been discussed for years now. There appears to be some additional tech in the vehicle to accommodate for the start/stop feature. Here is just one quick read from over 4 years ago. If anything, the tech should be better.

we have friends in europe who have used start stop since the 70's with a conventional starter. When they hit a red light, turn off the ignition, when the red light flashes, they hit the starter, When asked about starter issues, nope, still had starters lasting 100K miles or more. And that was with a conventional bendix drive starter and key switch, not any advanced technology.

I guess this all comes down to the manufacturing process of the starters, even if the starter is designed to be bulletproof. Try to save a cent here and another cent there in production, and there will be more "rotten apples" slipped through QC in the production batch.
