The 2016 MDX goes into park as soon as you open the door when I am in gear and come to a stop. I use this feature all the time. But if I am driving down the highway and open my door to say pull in a seat belt or my coat, will the transmission go into park and blow up? This would be crazy. Can someone please test.

Newer Audi's do the same thing, no it will not grenade the transmission while you're driving but idk why you would want to open your door on the freeway...

Lol I don't know if you're joking but I'm laughing at the request.

Now I'm thinking of those Hollywood movie scenes where the protagonist jumps out of the vehicle while aiming it full speed at the antagonist. The problem now though is that the protagonist is too late to realize he drove an MDX and the car comes to a screeching halt when the 9ZF decides to shift to P when the door opens. He them slams into the steering wheel, gets knocked unconscious, and the antagonist strolls over leisurely and puts a bullet between his eyes. THE END. BOOOOOO!!!

No, it will not. My salesperson demonstrated this safety feature at delivery. Every car should have it. Also automatically goes into park when you turn the car off, unlike most other cars.

I just had a 2016 MDX loaner car. I should have tried opening the door at freeway speeds.

I just tested this (stopped of course!) and wow. I knew if you hit start/stop it would auto park but didn't know about opening the door. Like these features.

I also try this today but my did not shift to Parked. I stopped at a red light and with foot on the brakes, I open the door and it stays in drive. Also try it at after parking with shift in Drive and foot on brakes and open door, it still stays in drive. Is there a settings in the menu to set this?

I will say the door had to be open about 3-4 seconds for it to shift. If you do a quick open it won't do it.

Finally got a chance to try it today. With the driver side door open, it took about 15 seconds before the gear switched to Parked.

I think your seatbelt has to be unbuckled for it to shift to park right when you open the door.
