2016 AWD MDX Hubs

Just curios if anyone has converted 2016 AWD MDX hubs to 2020 AWD MDX hubs.

I'm guessing the OP wants to go from 5x114.3 bolt pattern (14-16 MDX) to the 5x120 bolt pattern (pre-14, and 2017+ MDX). Definitely adds more options for wheel choices if you're looking for OEM wheels from later 3rd and 4th gen models. Anyway, to the OP's question, I've not seen any posts where someone has gone to this level to change the hubs (although others may know). Not sure it's worth the hassle IMHO.....

OP could have found the part number differences (OEM vendor part websites) by comparing 14-16 AWD MDX & contrasting 17-20 AWD MDX front / rear knuckles and front / rear hubs and seen that all of them are not the same.
As a result. 'swapping' them over would probably not work?

I agree, if the intention was wheel selection based on differing hub bolt patterns between the model years, lol.

The reason for the swap is to upgrade to the larger wheel studs. I had three fail on one wheel. Had a friends Honda do the same.

And just for your info, I am smart enough to have looked it up and at all the parts for the swap. It is possible to swap over. I was just curios if anyone had done it just for reference. Thats what smart people do.

Interesting that the concern is the thickness of the wheel studs. Would be very interested to see if it's really related to the load capacity of the studs themselves, or the side-effect of long-term use and possible over-torquing over time. But as you've seen by the lack of input, I'm not sure if anyone has actually tried this before. It's hard to tell of any other suspension component changed that would result in an issue with the hub replacement. You may need to be the guinea pig and give it a try and see what you find! Good luck.

I feel this is a known issue otherwise why would they change it from '16 to '17 and beyond. My MDX has been meticulously maintained, and the wheel lugs have always been torqued by me. It has only been to the dealership a couple of times and there should have been no reason for them to remove the wheels.

The fronts are fairly straight forward, press out the smaller hubs and press the larger hubs back in as the hub bearing is the same between the two. The rear is a little more involved. It requires the knuckle to be replaced as well as the hub. It's about $1200 for the parts plus tires for a set of wheels I think will work I took off of my '21 TLX TypsS. I plan to do it after the first of the year and will update after.

I look forward to you incurring the expense of this 'swap' and proving me wrong, until then...

Ok, I got this project mostly done. It turned out to be way easier than I thought it would be. The only thing left is a spare tire and the wheels from my '21 TLX Type S have TPMS sensors are not compatible with the'16 MDX system so I had to order those and will get the swapped out later this week. The cost was less than first thought due to not having to replace the rear knuckle.
The cost was:
Honda parts: $1248
Tires (needed to be replaced anyways): $2080
Rotors (needed to be replaced anyways) :$466
Spare tire: $142

wow, you did it! got pictures? interesting as I had a 2014 mdx for until recently with 113k miles on it and no issues with the wheel studs. are your suspension parts needing addressed as well?

what was your symptom for the failing wheel studs? curious to know

I will take pictures, although not much to see. It looks like the old hubs just bigger studs and a different bolt pattern.

Mine has 235,000 on it and is driven spiritedly every day. I think the suspension is fine. It's the same as the newer MDX.

I was driving home and noticed a funny little vibration on left hand corners. Should have just looked at it but I didn't notice that one stud/lug was missing until I had it on the lift. When I went to remove the other lugs two broke right off with little effort. Only two where still on and torqued.

I had a friend that has a 2012 CRV that had a similar thing happen as well.

This also allows me to get Brembo rotors. As with the old hubs there is not much of a good selection of rotors for them.
