Using tires from 17s on 18s

I am thinking of upgrading to 18's (from the stock 17s) and am wondering if it is possible to use the tires from the smaller rims on the bigger ones. Sorry if this question seems amateurish. I totally admit I'm a knucklehead when it comes to cars. Thanks in advance for the help.

No, you can usually stretch tires to wider wheels but never a larger diameter.
