Stock vs. Aftermarket Wheels: My Observations
I just spent the past hour putting my stock wheels and tires back on the car, then going for a test drive. Here are my observations:
- The stock wheel/tire combo is heavier than my 19x8.5 Enkei/Bridgestone combo.
- 245/35/19 really is slightly less diameter than 225/50/17. Yes, we knew this from the math, but I saw it in action when I was able to fit the 19s in the trunk more easily.
- Tire grip makes a difference in steering. The steering wheel felt very light after putting the 17s back on.
- More sidewall = more sidewall flex when turning. Again, theory matches real world. Still, it could still depend on the tires, I'm guessing.
- The ride is relatively more comfortable. I drove over some of the same bumps around here and it definitely felt less painful than driving over them on the 35 series tires.
- New tire pressure sensors of the same part number did not require a learning period. There was no warning beep or anything, even when I had 8 sensors in the car. After I put away the 19s, there were still no problems at all.
- It's no fun using the spare tire jack to jack up and change 4 wheels, but given my current living situation, that's what I have to do.
I'm looking forward to trying out some spirited driving with the stock wheel/Eibach combo, and am specifically wondering how good the Eibachs are with the stockies. We shall see.
Have a nice weekend everyone.
