Thumbs down Stock Michelin Pilot HX MXM4's - they suck!

To start things off, I'll say that this is my 2nd TSX. The first one was a 2004 NBP Non-Navi that I purchased brand new back in February of 2004. I still enjoy my '04 a lot so I still have it. When I first got it, it too came with the same tires, just smaller at 215/50-17 v. my V6's 235/45-18's. I have to say that on my '04, I enjoyed the tires for a good 20,000 miles and then they got scary to drive in wet weather but on my 2010, the car doesn't even have 500 miles on it and these things just don't have any grip in wet weather. I've played around with different tire pressure settings (cold I've tried 29, 31, 33 and 35 so once they warmed up they got to around 32, 34, 36 and 38, respectively) and I've even tried starting out in 2nd gear but to no avail, still very little grip upon any type of acceleration above 2,500rpm.

That's my rant and my short review. Perhaps they were so much better on my '04 because the car had 80 less horsepower and 90 less lb.ft. of torque but needless to say, I'll be swapping these out for a set of summer-only Continental Extreme Contact DW's as soon as temps maintain above 40 degrees for a week or so. I've always preferred summer tires during the spring, summer, and fall seasons and dedicated winter wheels and tires during the winter season, anyways.

Expect a review of these new Conti's pretty soon!

i'm a fan of the bridgestone ponteza's the all weather ones have done me solid. 23k miles and still running strong, suppose to last for 20k miles but i got plenty of tread left and plenty of grip remaining in wet weather at 120 + mph
and im slammed running in excess of -3 to -4 camber on both sides

My MXM4s are fine. May I suggest slow down in the WET. They are good tires.

I found these tires are ok in the dry, bad in the wet, but good in the snow. Considering they are all seasons you have to accept the fact that these tires will not be particularly good at one thing..just good enough to do a bit of everything.

Car and Driver recently compared dry, wet, and snow performance of the various tire categories, and used Michelin examples for each type. They were highly impressed with the MXM4's, which they seemed to prefer overall to the "ultra-high performance all-season" tire. I've been happy with them so far, though I suspect they contribute to the numb on-center steering feel.

Due to that, when I need new tires, I'll get Continental ContiExtremeContact DWS. I had an earlier version on a Saab 9-5 Aero, and they effectively balance handling, comfort, and all-season utility. They aren't great in the snow, but they do okay, and we normally don't get much snow in Philly. I don't expect another winter like this one for a loooooong time.

The weird thing is, the reviews on Tirerack say the HX MXM4s suck in the snow....

I have had two of the MXm4 tires go bad on me, the first was with only 1700 miles, it had cracks all along the sidewall, and was replaced by a Michelin dealer in Vermont at no charge, the second happened today with only 7300 miles, like the first it is on a front wheel, I will take it to a dealer in NYC, but there must be a defective batch. Has anyone else had this problem?

yes i must agree these tires are complete garbage. i have had them on numerous honda/acura vehicles in the past. they suck in the dry, wet and snow. they are incredibly expensive. the only positives are they are quiet and last long. time for a new oem tire..

so true. These things are decent dry but overall I'm pretty unimpressed with the wet weather performance. We got a light sprinkling last week and the damn traction control light was always going off. I wasn't feathering the throttle but I wasn't exactly flooring it either. Snow traction was decent this past winter.

45K miles on my stock tires. I've been really impressed all the way...dry, wet whatever. I've got another 15K left in them before they'll need replaced, and still gripping in the wet!

I have 25k miles and these are fine for me so far. No issues with dry or wet. Although once I need to replace them, I'll go with something else.

At 24K miles, we've got 2 bubbles in the INSIDE sidewall of the right rear tire on the MXM4s. A friend of mine with an Accord with similar Michelin's had sidewall bubbles happen twice so that's it. Dealer discovered the bubbles when they replaced the crummy rear brakes today!

But get this... went to Costco figuring a couple of these wouldn't cost too much - $237 plus tax per tire on special order.

I agree with an earlier poster, almost anything reasonable is better and certainly cheaper, even Bridgestone Potenza Pole Position's are $40 per tire cheaper at the local tire outlet. I figure rather than by 2 new MXM4's, we'll get 4 new (and probably better) tires. Looking at Falken Ziex ZE-912's at $125 apiece. Anyone need 3 MXM4's with 24K miles?

And WheelWorks has Buy 3, Get 4th free on the Ziex 912's in June. Yeah, they aren't peak performance tires, but it is mainly the wife's commute car and it don't snow here. Hate to throw away the MX4s but it doesn't make sense to throw good money at them when I can spend less on 4 new tires.

In a recent review of the Mazda 6, Motor Trend was critical of the MXM4. And after 6 weeks, I'm returning my DWS tires (225/50-17 on an 06 TSX 6MT); they may be OK in the wet, but too sloppy on HOT, dry roads - no grip, low speed squealing, slow turn-in, understeer everywhere. Nice ride, though.

Stay away from the 912's. I bought them for my '04 thinking they would be even better than the 512's, which all of my buddies loved, and they were crap. Worst all-season tire I've ever purchased.

The stock Michelin tire are avg/mediocre at best. Just go to tirerack and look at the survey for the stock Michelins. They are about half way down in the middle to bottom part of the list, as to why I say avg or mediocre in all categories. There are many many tires better than those OEM and they are ridiculous expensive to replace. There are tires much cheaper then these that are better in every category.

To be honest, the stock Michelin are much better than the stock Bridgestones you get on the non-nav models. They are ranked at the bottom for almost all categories.

The OEM Michelins are okay tires that should get you through until you can replace them with a higher quality tire. Here is the link to tire rack for those stats I was telling you about.

I agree-they lasted on my tsx 74,000 miles (thread was 4/32 on all 4 tires when I replaced them. I was very pleased with them. I now have Yokohama Avids VS tires. very disappointed in them. Lose traction on wet pavement and are very noisey. My car now has 107,000 miles. I get the tires rotated and balanced every oil change and check the pressure often.

sidewall cracks

Had three separate sidewalls go; one at 23,000; 35k & 37k. Wasn't the least bit happy with the mxm4s except maybe mileage ; now seems like a good time to look into a winter/summer (NoCentMA) swap stategy. Good Luck...

They aren't bad for what they are. The car should have come with 18 or 19 inch wheels, but for a 17 inch tire it isn't bad.

We ended up getting the Falken Ziex 912s 3 months ago for both of our sporty cars (other car is 94 SC400). We're in California so there is no all-weather issue to speak of. They are quieter and better behaved than the stock tires, and after about 3K miles they are settling in pretty well. Its the wife's road warrior car and she is 100% satisfied.

I got them for the SC400 as an experiment since they've discontinued the Bridgestone Pole Position S-series which I loved (and which would have been triple the price of the 912s) and they are standing up pretty well.

And the bottom line is the bottom line - basically 1/2 to 1/3 the price of competitive major brand tires so its not a bad way to go in a recession.

They are a very expensive middle of the road , performance wise all season tire.
Acura uses them to help convey the image they want.
There are much better choices out there for less money.
It all depends on where you live and if you run winter tires. They are quiet give decent wear. I will not spend the money when it comes time to replace. I use Dunlop Graspic's for winter, on spare wheels. I have been liking General Exclame UHP's. I have them on my CL-S (225/50/17) and on my G35. Good in wet. Handle well. Quiet tread pattern.

And the Image does look good!! Too bad so many people say they don't like them. I was contemplating replacing my new S04's with these.. Just for the looks. haha (and maybe softer that wouldnt jar my rattling front suspension) S04's also have a lot of "ring" when you hit a bump.. Tire rack reviews give this tire a 3/5 stars..(1800 reviews) bummer!
