Odd RPM Needle Movement

Hi all,

I've recently noticed that at times the RPM needle would kind of get "stuck" in a sense. Meaning I would be accelerating, and the RPM needle would stay stagnant. Then all of a sudden it will jump up to a certain RPM, instead of the normal steady progression upwards of the RPM needle. This doesn't happen all the time..most of the time the needle moves normally, at a steady pace up or down.

Anyone have any ideas? Or is that normal.

Thanks all!

is it at the exact same spot on the RPM range? could the actual needle be dirty or something? i'd take it to the dealer

hey pyro not exactly sure..I'll try to get a video of it. It could be dirty..but I've only owned the car for three months. Bought it brand new 2012. Another explanation of what it looks like is that the RPM needle is trying to catch up after it gets stuck. Kind of like how a second hand ticks on one of those old school clocks. Does your car do that pyro?

hate bringing it to the dealer...they never admit there's an issue and I can never replicate.

Here is a video, not the actual issue but close...it's hard to get the actual issue on video while driving and on top of that it happens on sporadic accel. This video is an accel video and you can see how the needle drop is unnatural..at least not similar to any car I own. The drop is so rapid. I will try and get an actual video of the issue.

looks like the car is up and downshifting, it is an auto... i can take a vid of mine tomorrow. as the car shifts up, the rpm's drop.

check if you notice a pattern, do you by chance let go of the gas a lil bit before it jumps? i've used that trick to get my car to shift early. in heavy accel, it'll keep the lower gear for more power, then switch to the next gear for economy

Thanks Pyro. Yup I thought that too..but doesn't that one rapid drop look abnormal to you? Most cars I'm in the RPM drops smoothly when shifting up a gear. I actually got a better video last night.

Check out around 24 seconds..right when it upshifts to 4th gear I believe..and that rapid, unsmooth drop of RPM needle. It could be normal..but all the cars I've driven in the past it's never done that. Thanks everyone.

i took a video, uploading now. your TSX is totally fine, the RPM drop is simply from upshifting

Being unbiased because I never sat in the TSX before, both Pyro and the OP's RPM needle movement look similar.

Thanks Pyro.

and I know I'm being extremely anal, but does your RPM needle once in a while bounce up and down slightly (at most 1 rpm) when idle Pyro? Whether it be in Park/Drive during idle. Just want to make sure everything is working properly. Got a long road trip coming up! Thanks!

the RPM's are never exactly stable, in idle, they vary between 800-900 or so RPM. there was an easter egg that you could get the base model radio display to display the RPM's, and speed in KM/h. pretty cool. it was something like hold the 1 and 6 presents for 10 seconds then press the power button
