Missing gear

SO this question is pretty much directly to Heavyduty .. Every so often I get a little too hot and bothered in my drivers seat and I go to throw it down from 1st to 2nd or maybe 2nd to third sometimes 4th to 5th and I let off the clutch before the stick is set all the way in gear, and i hear the diploids (Sp?) grind and kick me out of the gear.. How much damage am I doing to my Transmission.. Discuss

There's lots of people here more knowledgeable than myself, but grinding the gears occasionally won't kill it in the short term. However, the more you do it and the speed relative to the gear you're trying to engage will eventually wear the synchro's and/or the input/main shaft gears in the long run.

Worst damage I know of (barring speed shifting, using no clutch) is the silent killer of riding around with your hand resting on the shift knob, which, imho, is a contributor to bent shift forks. (Gear pop-out).
