Gear Box Grinds Going In Reverse

Just about every time I try to shift my car into Reverse (6 speed) it grinds going in. The only times it goes in smooth is when I shift to 2nd or 4th and then to reverse. I bought the car used 2 years ago with 38,000 it's a 09 and I noticed it would grind after the warranty from the dealership expired.

My questions is does this fall under the power train warranty from the manufacturer?? My car has 66,xxx right now. Thanks

My experience has been that this is not uncommon with any manual transmission. I had to think about it for a minute since I don't drive a stick regularly anymore, but realized that I'm actually in the habit of automatically engaging a forward gear (usually 1st or 2nd) before shifting into reverse. I'd guess that reverse is not synchronized in the Honda box (many are now a days), and that may have something to do with it. I don't know why it works, it just does. To the OP, I'd just get used to the idea of grabbing a forward gear before you shift into reverse. It will become automatic before you know it, and you won't even notice that you're doing it.

Are you moving before going into reverse? Even if you're just rolling in neutral before going into reverse it will grind

Yup, everytime. Gotta make sure you are completely stopped.

In contrast, you can still be rolling backward and shift into 1st gear without any grinding.

All my Hondas have been like that. I always come to a full stop ... shift to 1st gear then reverse.

there's no synchro for the reverse gearset it will grind some, make sure you are engaging the clutch all the way too.
