Check tpms-system fault error
Hi there,
This is my first post and wondering if anyone can help me on explaining why the fault code appeared.
Conditions:
In the past week its has been cold in Vancouver, Canada -10 to +3 with about 15-20 cm of snow.
Snow tires on the car are 215/55/17 on steel Acura wheels w/tpms (stock alloys with 225/50/17 are in the garage)
I had got stuck in the snow and managed to break loose in reverse with the VSA turned off.
After that the fault code came on.
I've checked all tires with a proper tire guage and all read 33 psi.
1)Can the cause of the fault be the "different" tire size?
2) Is this fault more cold weather?
3) Should I go back to the tire shop that I bought my tires from or go back to the Acura dealer on this fix?
4) Will I have to re-program my tpms for "snow tire" and "stock tire " applications?
5) How many tpms programs can the the tsx hold or will i have to do this every time I swap the wheels over?
Thanks for your help

I have several sets of rims, all with TPMS sensors in them.
I do have an 08 though, so take that into consideration.
but anyway, I swap them back and forth and never hit any
error codes from them. if the pressure drops, it will set off
a warning that it is low, but that's all.
your 09 and my 08 have slightly different systems for TPMS though,
but not drastically different.
what is the MID reading for individual pressures?
I know you said a manual gauge read 33 for each, but what does the
car tell you it thinks it is at?
I personally would bring it to the dealer.
you're under warranty, so it won't cost any money, just time.
better safe, you know?
they should work fine, and if the pressures are fine, but you
are still throwing a code, I would suspect a problem.

thanks for the info mmstsx. the system says check tpms / system function error with no readings of what the tire pressures are. i just checked tire my tires again with the gauge after driving to work (short drive in the morning) and all tires are 35 lbs/psi. tpms and steel wheels are purchase from the acura dealer the only "after market" item are the snow tires. stock tires on the car are 225/50/17 for the snow tires they are 215/55/17 do you think the slight difference in sizing may cause the problem fault code? i'm going to the dealer this saturday.

no.
the tires are not the problem.
nor is your pressure.
forgive me here, but does your car not tell you individual tire
pressures in your MID display? or do you just not know how to use it?
this is how it would go on my 08:
the MID would display some sort of error message.
then I would press the "i" button on the steering wheel to access the MID.
I would cycle through the MPG, the range left, etc until the screen came up
that says tire pressure ok. I would then press the other button and it
would show each individual pressure for each tire.
so can the 09 not do that?
I would think that it can, I personally doubt they would do away with that function.
anyway, there is obviously a problem with the system or something connected to it.
the temperature is NOT the issue.
the pressure in each tire is also not the issue, not if your gauge is reading them
all within the specs. it doesn't matter what tires or even rims you have for that
matter, as long as the TPMS sensors are from Acura, for your car and year.
sounds to me like this is a dealer only fix from your explaination.
luckily it is not a safety issue.
the tires and pressures are fine, it's just the TPMS system somewhere that is wacked out.
next question:
who installed the sensors into the rims?
did the dealership do it? or a tire place? or did you do it yourself?
I understand that the rims and sensors are from a dealership, just wondering
who actually put them in the valve stem holes prior to the tires being mounted.

"forgive me here, but does your car not tell you individual tire
pressures in your MID display? or do you just not know how to use it?"
I'm sure it does tell you the individual pressures (when it functions correctly) but ...when there is a system malfunction..it doesnt tell you anything. i did push the (i) button it says "check tpms" pushed it again it says "system function error" with no psi indications.
"anyway, there is obviously a problem with the system or something connected to it.

next question:

the tpms were installed by a large across canada Candian tire shop
(OK tire). (Dealer didnt have any snow tires in October) It worked for a good month before the error happened. I'm guessing maybe one of the tires hit 6" of deep semi frozen snow and damaged one of the sensors. (of course if this is the case it wont be coverd under warranty)
if the sensor werent damaged but in fact defective can the dealer figure this out with out dismounting the tires? i'm hoping i can still get warranty on this (if its in fact defective tpms) but dont want them to say dealer not install so no warranty...which is bogus imo.

well...
I would say that yes, you could angle for warranty replacement.
I would explain it as such:
you ordered the rims and TPMS sensors from them.
they did not have tires for you, so you had to go elsewhere for
tire mounting. you went and had a professional shop do it.
they must have done things right, because all the sensors
and everything worked fine for some time.
then all of a sudden the TPMS system threw up the error msgs.
so it is suspected that one or all of the sensors sold to you
are defective or something and in need of replacement under warranty.
tires are fine, pressures are fine.
I have no idea how they will be able to tell what is wrong.
they have to unmount the tire to get at the sensor, so they have a lot
of work ahead of them potentially to find the problem.
they could just switch out your rims/tires one at a time with a rim/tire
from a car on the lot to try to isolate what sensor it is before they
unmount any tires... not sure how they will approach it.
very possibly it's not the sensor inside any of the tires, but some other
sensor mounted on the body somewhere that is being blocked or is damaged..?
If I were you, I'd ask for a loaner car while they are figuring out the issue.
it very well could take several hours at least.

Oliver!!!
Or, if you have some spare time and initiative, you could swap the wheels for your stockies sitting in the garage and see if you still get the fault. If that's the case, you've got a problem with a sensor. If it doesn't go away, you've got a deeper problem that the dealer will need to diagnose.
Now, I'm not saying you need to drive around in the snow on your stock tires, just change them out to check the TPMS system.

same problem here!
Hi,
I also have the exact the same problem.
2007 TL-Type S was in the garage, then i i parked it outside for like an hour to do some work. When i restarted the car i got the "TPMS SYSTEM ERROR" message.
I live in Canada and it was a cold night around 0F or -18C that night.
Does anyone know if there is a way to reset it? I ahve tried to pull the TPMS fuse and disconnect the battery hoping to reset it. Nada
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm really tired of the error messages. In the last 18 months, every time my winters go on and off (I change the tires, not the rim), the error message comes in. All work has been done by the dealer. I have to take the car back and they 'fix it'. It's happened again this spring. yesterday, I brought it in, they added more air, reset the system. Two hours after I picked it up, the trusty old error is back... Don't want to bring it to the dealer again.... I'll tell them to pick it up this time...
It's a 08 TL Type S.
