Another brake/rotor problem

Another brake/forum problem. Let's see if anyone had similar issue and can offer some advice. This is first time changing brake pad for me. So, go easy on me.

Decided to change out my rear brake pads on my 2010 tsx with 20000 miles. Heard so many stories about early wear on the model although my car is not listed as part of the accord/tsx $150 court settlement in 2010. If not familiar, check www.accordsettlement.com. The caliper seemed a bit hard to take off, had t use a pry bar gently leverage it out. The pads still had about 4 mm left. Evenly worn. So I left it alone.

After putting it back, went for a drive about 2 miles. When I got out, smelled metal burning and saw red hot glowing rotor on the brake that worked on earlier. As I was driving it back home, I felt some gentle pulsing during brake. Probably a piston locked up if I am not mistaken. Could this be because I didn't push back the piston before placing the caliper back?

Got a bit worried and took it to a local dealer who said there is nothing wrong with the brake other than worn rear pads that need replacing. I told them to change out the pads so that I don't have to deal with this anymore even though I have new pads at home. BTW, the pads I have are Hawks ceramic and they don't seem to have the holes to hold V springs. Are the V springs required to be placed back? I am also worried that there many be rotor or caliper problem in future. Should I be concerned?

Sounds like a sliding pin or shim got stuck when you were trying to put it back together.
I'm assuming you didnt use a grease/shim lubricant when putting it back together.

Like you assumed; the piston got stuck and caused that rotor to over heat, thus the red rotor.

if dealer took it apart and said all is in working order; then it should be all in working order.

i would keep an eye on it tho.
if you have an infrared thermometer; it can also help you monitor rotor temps

did you reset the rear caliper piston......there is a way to TURN it, there are even specialized tools for this.........if you look on the back of the caliper you will see like a big X on the back of where the piston is.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ i CAN SAY I have never seen this type of piston before but the service manual talks about TURNING the piston out to get new pqads in. then there is a pin on the pad that fits into the face of the piston.
face of piston has some GROOVES cut into it.

I suspect it has something to do with 4 wheel discs and emer brake.

they even sell TOOLS to trun the piston on different vehicles.

and a youtube

On rear disc brakes that also double as the parking brake, the piston cannot be pushed back inside directly - it needs to be turned (i.e., screwed) back in with the help of a specialized tool.

Thanks everyone for the helpful ideas and advice.

OK. Next time, I will remember to use the grease and also to turn the piston. Will get that special tool.

One more thing. Has anyone used Hawks pads? They don't seem to have the holes for V springs. Can anyone share a Helms service manual instruction on brake job?

i used some ceramic replacements for mine and they DID have the holes for the springs and came with all new springs in the box too. stoptech????? IIRC its in my progress/

rear only odus. there is a pin on the back of the pads that needs to go in the slots machined into piston/

i may have some pics when i swapped my rotors and pads....but I only had 3K miles on them so i didnt need to TURN the piston just had to make sure the pin fell into the right place.

When i changed the pads on an integra a few years back, i thought the caliper was froze. Little did i know that it had to be turned in, thank god for the interweb.

I still don't have that tool, but i have a couple chisels that i use to spin the piston.

I just use a pair of needle nose pliers, with care.
