'09 TSX "Channel Drain" Simply Came Loose?!?

So here is something very interesting: I opened my moon roof today and casually noticed that it just didn't seem to open quite as far. Thinking it was just me, I paid little attention to it. But when I closed the moon roof and pulled the shade forward, a big part came forward with it all and was now clearly rattling around above the sun shade. For the life of me I could not figure out what exactly this part was, its purpose or most importantly, where exactly it came from/how it could be put back into place. In doing some research, I found it is this part (#4), the "Channel Drain":

http://parts.sonsacura.com/showAssem...roduct=1593673

Of course my plan is to take the car to the dealer for repair, but has anyone else experienced anything like this? Anyone who has done your own mods, ever need to take the moon roof apart and know what to do with this part?!? If it's an easy fix, I'd love to just be able to put it back together myself (I did try a few things, but the tight fit in that area did not make working on it very user friendly...and I have no interest in taking the entire moon roof apart). It is literally laying loose across the tracks and moves with the moon roof, and rattles BADLY on the sun shade when it is shut. Also, it was nice enough to smear grease across the top/sides of the sun shade as well.

Probably a remnant from your earlier accident. This should be covered by insurance if you are out of warranty or the dealer determines that it was caused by outside influences.

After I made this post I was thinking that as well, ceb. So now as I think about this more, I am wondering if I should just take it back to the body shop where I got my car fixed or take it to the dealer?!?

Correct.

It would be unethical to try to get it fixed under warranty if you knew that it was a result of the accident but in this case you don't know.

I've not heard of anything like this before, so Acura will want to see it determine if it is a problem that may require a design fix.

I never use my moonroof for anything but a temporary place to put my coffee cup.

Thanks for the feedback, all! As the terrible luck I have been having as of late would have it, my car would not start this morning when I tried to leave for work so the car went back to the body shop. They looked at the moon roof issue and from what they can tell, it is indeed a result of the accident. The repair is not going to be a fun process for them, though, and here I am again without my car...

Oh and the car wouldn't start because it was found that the battery is going bad. Hell of a coincidence, eh?!? And very disappointing that a barely 3 year old battery is already shot...and yes, that is one thing I will be contacting the dealership about...

EDIT: for the record, I did not think that it was from my accident at first because the part is not broken at all from what I could tell, and it really does look like it just simply fell off somehow...even with the force of the impact from my accident, I would not have expected a part like that to just come loose...especially considering the moon roof was closed during the accident.

the batteries are one of the known achilles heels of these cars. i got mine replaced this winter when the car was less than 2 years old. its a good thing i always keep good guage jumper cables in the trunk, i've jumped the car probably close to a dozen times throughout its life and its only a 2010 lol

I saw on the Honda forums that Accord owners have replaced their factory battery with the one from the V6. Our cars have the same batteries: size 51R for the 4 cyl and 24F for the V6. If I change my V6 for the 4 Cyl, I will definitely replace the battery. Not a direct fit but minor replacement of parts are required (tray, holder etc.)

Was that replaced by Acura or did you purchase another one? If our batteries are crap (and they definitely seem to be with the more I am hearing), I guess getting another one from the dealer may not be the best move.

Very interesting, TSXV6Guy!

Did you read your warranty manual. Lots of interesting stuff in there.

I could easily see how one would think I would deserve this response lol however, it is in my glove box and seeing as the car is not with me right now no, no I have not. But I have since done a little research since my post, though, and it appears as if it will be less hassle for me to just go buy a new one...I'll call the dealer and figure it out from there. I won't be seeing my car AGAIN for at least a few more days, so I have some time to work this out *sigh*

Ceb is just a butthead loserface(love ya buddy <3)

i have a lease, and they replace it for free, so fuck it, may as well just keep replacing it free as soon as it starts failing, but i only have a 3 year lease, so i figure that one replacement was enough

Why don't you go back and play in the sandbox with your other little friends.

If you had any interest in being helpful, then you would have pointed the OP in the direction of the online warranty information which I couldn't because I was on a tablet at the time.

As I read the warranty information, the original battery is warrantied for the duration of the warranty (4/50) while the key fob battery is covered for 6 months/6k miles.

Once the battery is replaced, it is covered by a 8yr/100k prorated warranty.

Accordingly, if the OP is still under warranty then the battery should be covered. However, there are too many coincidences with things going wrong with your car. The battery may have failed due to a charging issue based on a bad ground because of the accident.

A quick update: the car did go back to the body shop, the channel drain issue was found to be related to the accident and the channel drain has been fixed. And the body shop confirmed when I picked up the car what I had suspected, and it was not an easy job. But iIt's like new now and working flawlessly, so I am happy!

Thanks, ceb! As soon as I got my car I checked out the warranty info, and found similar to what you state above. The battery was load tested, alternator was checked, etc., and it was confirmed that the battery issue is NOT related to the accident, and the battery is going bad. However, since the car needed to be jumped that one day, it has started with no issues since. But of course I am not going to play around with it just to be stranded somewhere one day, so I will get it replaced.

I wonder what else wasn't fixed right.

Here is my suggestion. - go to CARMAX and get a trade in appraisal. If they find no issues then trade it in. If they do find issues, then you can get the bodyshop to correct them. Either way you'll be ahead.
