Cheapo eBay intake

Has anyone used them? To me the name brands are doing the same thing the cheap ones are doing, so I can't justify spending $250.00 on one. The only reason I'm even looking at an intake is because my stock intake cover is damaged (the top half that covers the filter itself) and a new one is about $100 from the dealer. I can't find a used one either, so if I spend about $100, it might as well be an after market intake...

Intake in question:

My TL intake is from that seller, the tube, clamps, couplings are good quality. You might wanna grab a better filter at some point. No point to pay for a brand name.

Just take the air filter off and cover the opening with a kleenex held on by a rubber band.

At that time you will have done as much actual research and testing as these guys.

Manufacturers spend millions designing a modern airbox. These guys are using some plastic plumbing and a filter that may- or may not - filter anything.

With this I can virtually guarantee you poor filtration, poor performance, raspy sound (you want to sound like a 12 year old?) and possible engine damage.

Still a little more than I'd like to spend, so I might just keep it oem. Thanks tho!

Lmao, nice comparison! But I'm not sure what other kits you've looked at, but the intake tubing is still aluminum. So if they have the same diameter and bends, then I don't see what difference that will make. As far as air filter goes, I can see your point there. But in actuality I'm sure these knock offs have copied the name brands design as far as size, shape, and bends, so you can kinda say they have the same r&d in them also, maybe lol. But thanks for your input. And I'm running stock exhaust, will it really change the note that much??

That's right. That's the same kit that you can buy direct for $69.99 right from AutoGrimmig. The site says that it includes "generic installation instructions" so I'm sure that they spent lots of time tailoring that intake for the specific requirements of the TSX. I wonder if they ever even bothered test fitting it to a TSX.

Then, of course, there is the oil free rewashable [sic] air filter which I'm sure will filter out small birds (and maybe large insects) that get sucked ito the engine.

You're right, they claim it is aluminum although the phot really looks like transluscent plastic.

Remember that combustion is air and fuel in a proper ratio. An intake does one thing - it filters the air coming going into the engine. A well designed airbox also begins to restrict airflow to approximate what the engine can use. Too much air and the other components need to add fuel for that proper mixture.

This "intake" just dumps gobs and gobs of badly filtered hot air (you think the air next to the engine actually is cold? Maybe in Alaska in January) where the rest of the intake system now struggles to control it.

Modern intake systems from the manufacturer are about as efficient as they get, unlike the time before the 80's when the intakes were restrictive and manufacturers were struggling to figure out how to integrate emission controls.

Idk if you live under a rock, but Alaska is hot as fuck in January, that's why ppl from colder climates travel there in the winter so they can surf and put shrimp on the barbie, maybe check out some kangaroos also.
And everyone knows the coldest air is between that v4 engine thingy and the fire wall... No shit the air isn't cold next to the engine. I was never looking for cooler air intake, if I was I would look for an actual cold air induction system, not a short ram intake (of any brand) No need for you to get all butt hurt. I appreciate your info & input. And I completely agreed about a better quality air filter but please save the sarcasm and insults to yourself. Cuz really IDGAF! Now if all you're doing is just simply trying to stress the importance of quality, that's all you had to say with out all your b.s

Ceb is right. The factory intake is as good as it gets... From what i have read with most intakes you can actually lose power (but maybe gain 1-2HP at redline) IMO not worth it.

Yeah, I was never really looking for major hp gains. And i know that if any gains for the price is definitely not worth it. Especially if you're paying $250 or so on something like Injen. Don't get me wrong Injen, and the other big names out there are great. I just figured why spend $100 on just a oem filter cover if I can get a lower price knock off aftermarket intake for around the same price, that essentially is doing the same thing as the higher price big names. In all actuality, I'm most likely gonna keep it oem, I don't feel like cleaning out a cone filter every so often. I don't have time for stuff like that any more lol. But thank you for your simple and to the point info!!

Just goes to show you what a bad education and/or drugs do to you.

Perhaps you were thinking of Australia - not to be confused with Austria.

Since you appear to geographically challenged as well as just plain ignorant, I'd like to point out to you that Alaska is a US state - one of 50. It became the 49th state in 1959 and is pretty cold in January with temps drupping below -20 f in Fairbanks - Fairbanks is a city in the state of Alaska.

No, Australia is not the 50th state.

Lmfao!!!! I was being sarcastic!!! Now that I had to point that out to you, maybe you are the one who has received the sub par education or maybe done a bit too many drugs!! Or can it be you are just that plain ignorant that you can't understand sarcasm when it slaps you in the face! Way to turn this thread into something it was never intended to be. Since you think your wisdom is so superior, maybe you should hang out on the 4g tl side of the forums, or just go back to owning a BMW. Which by the way explains why you're such an arrogant bastard. Please feel free to remove your self from my thread and stick your head up your own ass. Because I think if you were to stick it up some one else's ass, it wouldn't be good enough for you.

Getting an aftermarket intake isn't too bad if you are getting a dyno tune or a reflashed ECU that includes more airflow....

I guess trying (badly) to explain your stupidity by trying to pawn it off as sarcasm after the fact is one way to try to save face.

I'd suggest that you buy that intake from eBay (spending more than buying directly from the dealer) and then come back here crying about your screwed up car - except of course you'll return with stories of 100mpg runs and 300hp.

Hey I tried being cool with him at first and even thanked him for his info. But he wants to be a complete douche bag. Can't blame me... Luckily for him he does have these forums to give him some sorry sense of having a life...

Yeah oooook, I guess if I was as big an idiot such as yourself I would claim intellectual superiority over all others as well. Or maybe you're just so disgruntled because you drive a station wagon that your wife (assuming she hasn't left you yet) made you buy it. And with that being said, I'm sure the only action you get from her is when she straps on her brutal dildo and fucks you up the ass till you cry like the little bitch you are. Then to try and feel better about your worthless self you come on to these forums and talk shit to others, because obviously no one cares about you where you are! If you ever took the time to read any of my replies to anyone else on here you would have seen I was never looking for performance gains what so ever! And I'm more realistic about any hp gains with any mods I do. So be on the look out for when I slap a bunch of V-tech, APC, and NOS decals on my car, those figures will shock the living shit out of you, my car won't even be street legal anymore now I will take it upon myself to be the bigger person and end this pointless ass argument and will not respond to any ramblings that you will continue to spill out, good day buddy

ceb knows his shit when it comes to cars. Reading through the whole thread again he never said anything instigating. I don't see why this thread has spiraled out of control.

As far as not wanting to "hear" his opinion on this intake is irrelevant. It isn't hurting my feelings about it. I never started this thread with the burning desire to buy it and it be the MOD of all MODS cream my pants king of the block shit. I was simply considering another option to replace my oem intake, which I said I'm most likely gonna keep anyways. I never once claimed it to be the most advanced space age piece of technology out there, hell my title even says CHEAPO intake lol! But anyways...

I ran an HPS short ram (including the cone filter that was supplied with it) for over 100K miles on my 05 (starting at around 70K miles). The car still ran like new and used no oil when I finally sold it (at 178K miles). I had the oil tested fairly regularly and the filter was doing its job. I don't believe any of the snake oil about higher performance or better mileage though, I just used it because it sounded cool.
