stock premium audio vs tech package audio?
stock premium audio vs tech package audio?
Is there a huge difference in quality, base and mid range?does the stock one distorte when played at max valume? i used to have a 05 altima sl with bose system and was very pleased?how would the stock one compare to the bose?i just cant afford a tech package
I have a not tired the ELS with anything besides FM radio (had a loaner) in the TSX so I really cannot compare.
However, I am very happy with the premium sound system in the TSX.
I had a Bose in my Maxima several years ago which I was very happy with the premium system is just as good as the Bose or better IMO. I have not had an distortion at Max volume, but I only tired it once very briefly, 30 (out of 40 max) seems plenty loud to me.

I have been researching both systems from the standpoint of providing a means to replace the factory amp with an aftermarket system like I did with the 1st gen TSX.
I currently have a Tech system so here is what I can tell you,
Like most everyone has noted the ELS system is designed around the DVD-Audio standard (try to find your favorite music on this dead format). I have a few DVD-A disks for my home system that I bought to hear the studio quality stereo sound not for remixed “surround sound” track. DVD-A disks have two folders, one with the remixed surround tracks and the other with a studio grade copy of the original mix. Unfortunately the ELS can only play the surround mix. Did I digress? Back to the ELS;
The external amp on the ELS system is a digital unit that has deferent eq profiles for each source selected at the HU, this is accomplished by a digital data buss between the HU and amp. The HU has a Dolby Pro logic setting that applies PL2 to the stereo source. Some might prefer this feature and the simulated surround it creates but as a purest I think it is crap. I think a quality stereo front sound stage is what you need to have a great system, my overall view of the ELS system is less attention should have been paid to the quantity of speakers, the DVD-A and the digital eq settings and more attention to high quality speakers for the front. Again, that is just my opinion, other might fell otherwise.
Overall the ELS system was designed to feature the DVD-A and play without the distortion that a typical stock system would have. To that end the ELS system does a great job.
Upgrades, the system could stand high quality aftermarket speakers; this will be my first upgrade. The tweeters are wired to the door speakers so a capacitor is located between the tweeter and the door. I think it will be attached to the back of the tweeter but I haven’t checked yet. All the other drivers are wired directly to the amp (each has its own channel) and the amps eq is controlled by the HU setting. The HU has a full 5.1 output. My upgrade plans will include aftermarket amps to the front and rear deck and the sub, I will not use the center channel or the rear door speakers so not to pollute the sound stage. The center channel only comes into play with DVD-A (I only have 5 disks in that format) and PL-2 which is crap for SQ. My interface will include all channels so that a full system can be built if desired.
The Premium system is similar to the 1st gen with the exception of the speaker locations and types and the HU now has a separate sub channel. The drivers in the Premium system all get a separate channel in the factory amp and the amp has fixed EQ. You can replace the speakers with aftermarket but you will have to use the factory xover setting unless you replace the factory amp. I will have the harness and converter for this in a few weeks.
Of course both systems power output is greatly exaggerated, the amps are on a standard 12volt buss and produce about 12-18 watts/ch depending on how much THD you can tolerate.
