Premium system overview and Mod options

I had a chance to do some testing of the Premium system in the base TSX so here’s the deal.

The base system is basically the same as the 1st gen TSX system in that it uses a small Pioneer amp. The amp is located in the trunk on the passenger side behind the trim panel. The HU provides 5 channels front/read and Sub. The HU output of all channels is flat with the exception of the sub which rolls off at higher frequencies (this is expected). The small external amp has filters to adjust the frequency response to each speaker just like the 1st gen. The amp also has a separate output channel for each speaker so the tweeters do not have an external inline crossover (capacitor).

The amp uses the same output MOSFET ICs as the 1st gen and will not drive a 2 ohm speaker. You must use 4 ohm with this system.

The HU output is balanced so if you want to tap it you will need a converter just like the 1st gen. In addition the 2nd gen audio system has a mute signal that has to be integrated as well. The V6 also has a feed into the amp for active sound control, I’m not sure if you would want this with a high end or aftermarket system. I am still investigating how to incorporate this.

Adding an amp:
If you just want to add a sub amp the just tap the speaker wires on the factory sub and run them to the speaker level input on your amp. You will have to live with the factory Sub EQ but it is the easiest way.

Adding a full system fronts and sub or F/R and sub
This will require an interface like the one I built for the first Gen. I built a prototype for testing (see photo) that gives RCAs for all HU channels. I still need to incorporate the mute and possibly the ASC into the final design. This is not an offer to sell anything; it is just an example of what is required to mod the Premium audio system.

You are without a doubt, the resident soundman for our TSX. Thanks for all the expert advice.
