Question While Driving & in Motion... Can you Switch back & forth from "P" to "S" mode?!?

I just got a New Black on Black w/ Tech Package TSX. I had a question about if you're already driving & in motion... can you swith to "S"port mode from "D"rive... and Vice Versa. Please let me know as I don't wish to damage any component of this new car. Thank you.

I haven't switched back and forth much 'on the fly' but it is ok to do so.

Unless it was fluke, every time I do this the transmission selects 3rd gear.

I rented a Volvo C30 T5 (turbo) last week on business travel and it has a manumatic that shifts in the center console. When you slide the shifter to manual mode on that car, it selects the same gear as it was in auto mode (usually 3, 4 or 5 in my case), and you shift manually from there.

Can anyone confirm if the TSX always picks 3rd (say above a minmum rolling speed of 30 mph or so), or it is just my habit of current speed when I shift to sport???

Yes I do it all the time, it's just like changing a gear. It will not let you hurt the car.

mine does the same thing! its kind of annoying.

my dads got a volvo s80 with the turbos. and when i put his into "manual" drive it does the same goes to 3rd gear.

i hve no idea why this happens. my 04' stays in whatever gear the car is in.

I think that it automatically select 3rd gear because it "assumes" that you did this to pass someone...therefore, it goes to the most optimal gear for quick power. I think that the 4th and 5th gear on the TSX (and all Acura for that matter!) auto tranny are overdrive gears...therefore, these gears are not ideal for passing someone on the highway. Rightfully so, the auto tranny shifts to 3rd gear for when you go into "S" mode.

I really like the responsiveness of the auto tranny!! The gearing may be conservative, but it sure works well! The whole powertrain is just so responsive, esp. given that it is only a 4-cylinder. There is just not much slack at all!

I actually don't mind it goes to 3rd, I switch to Sport for passing someone and I would've downshifted anyway.
