TSX sales still solid -- outsells IS, G Sedan

February 2009 sales. The listed percent for the TSX doesn't make sense (2,295 to 2,293 does not = +4.3%); the change is roughly -0%. Even with a 2 vehicle sales drop, the TSX is holding up pretty well while most auto sales are getting destroyed. YTD, the TSX is up 7.6% compared to last year (4699 vs. 4368).
TSX:
Feb 2009: 2,293
Feb 2008: 2,295
% Change: -0
YTD 2009: 4,699
YTD 2008: 4,368
% Change: 7.6
Compare this to the IS:
Feb 2009: 2,147
Feb 2008: 3,906
% Change: -42.7
YTD 2009: 4,547
YTD 2008: 7,168
% Change: -36.6
Once again, the TSX beat the IS in monthly sales. The TSX is also holding up strong against the Infiniti G, beating the G sedan in Feb 2009 sales 2,145), and holding up well against G Sedan + Coupe combined (3045).
I'd say the new TSX is a winner for Acura!

Looks like only the lower priced cars are keeping pace for Honda and Acura. Both the Fit and the TSX were down under 5%. All others took a major hit of about 40%-67% off with the exception of the Civic and CRV down about 20%.

The 4.3% increase might have to do with the amount of days in Feb. vs. March. Just a thought because there were more TSX's sold in February per day than January since there are less days in Feb.
Just a thought, but good to see sales are still solid. Acura did good keeping a fuel efficient entry-level luxury sedan and not creating a gas guzzler.

Some might say that it's not surprising that the TSX beats the G Sedan and the IS 250 because they are older models but I think the buying public is really picking up on the all around practicality of the car.
It seems that a lot of people have been saying "I went in to test drive this car but ended up choosing the TSX." Where the 1G TSX drove buyers to the 3G TL the 4G TL is now driving the same type of customer to the 2G TSX.
Where did the old 1G TSX customer go I wonder? I suppose if I watched the 1G board I see where people were defecting to but I don't. I no longer consider myself a 1G customer because if I had to do over again I wouldn't buy one. I was discontent with the 1G when I bought the 2G.

TSX is a nice car. G not in the same category I think. The IS is smaller and more expensive. But when the IS came out a while ago it sold like hot cakes. Good news for the TSX. I'm sure when the V6 comes out sales will improve more.

The Economy
Current market conditions make the TSX much more desirable than other entry level luxury cars. It has a lot of the amenities that you want like HIDs and navi but @ a cheaper price & w/ more MPG. The TSX has always been a wise choice but it is just in today's world, it is more obvious to consumers.
It is kind of hard to pass up a bargain price & good mpg when people are getting laid off everywhere. Of course, I am sure that a lot of potential TSX buyers are using the same logic & getting the Accord instead.

It might be a trickle down effect where former TL buyers are moving down to the TSX, some of the TSX buyers are moving to accords or other, but at the same time there's a growing class that is upgrading to the TSX (instead of the accord) because the price difference is not that dramatic. This may explain the sales, as a bulge in the middle is created?

It is very possible. At Benz we see people going from a leased E to a pre-owned E or a leased C. I had one lady go from a leased ML to a leased GLK.
The good thing is that Acura is keeping their customers if this is the case the bad news is they are taking away sales from themselves but, in this economy, it's as good as you can get maybe.

Couldn't have said it better.

If you're of the 1G owner variety that says the 2G TSX is too big and soft then where do you plan to go once you have to put a bullet in the ol' TSX (assuming you had to choose from the offerings currently in the market)?

I am not really sure what to do honestly.
Maybe i'll wait for acura to get itself together and wait for the 3G....
I've driven a lot of the other cars out there and the only one I'd even consider is the C class but I dont want to deal with german reliability. Or maybe the next G37 in 2011, or a 370z. Lexus is out since their cars just don't feelright.
Its tough really theres nothing super compelling that would make me as a 1G TSX owner want to swap. I mean even if the 2G tsx was less soft, and had a nicer grill etc, it still isn't much of an improvement.

if they brought this over instead... i could be tempted to get my 40mpg on.

the current TSX doesnt give you a lot over a 1G in my opinion.

I was a 1G owner and really like the 2G as well, it's as though I am growing up as the TSX grows up. Though it's easy to see why some wouldn't like it. When I bought my 1G I was 23 and was very different from who I am today.

The apeal, or lack thereof, of a V6 AT sports sedan was decided long ago when the IS350 came out without an MT option.
IMO an MT Ford Taurus feels more sporty than AT TSX. There's really no point in having stiffer suspension, a low ride, a cramped cabin and a fast engine if all your car requires of you is that you depress your right foot from time to time. And if sports shift isn't for posers I don't know what is.

But, if my car was totaled (may that never happen!) right now and I had to get a new car, my choice would be... hard. I would without a doubt shop the 2G TSX - I don't hate it, it just doesn't speak to me like the 1G did/does (I would not shop the freak show looking TL at all this time).
But, ultimately, I'd probably end up looking long and hard at the BMW 328 and the Audi A4 and would get one of those if I could afford the difference in this hypothetical scenario. The quality ratings of both have improved, esp. Audi, and this is one reason I didn't seriously consider them when shopping 2003 - 2004.

If anyone doesn't like the 2G TSX I'm certain they will hate the 3G. Based on the positive sales of the 2G over the 1G and other Acura offerings there will most likely make it even more of a one size fits all car than it already is. The will not offer a smaller, sportier sedan bearing the TSX name.
At the moment I don't think Honda knows how to make a competitor for the 3 series. They thought the 1G TSX would be it and it definately wasn't. It didn't even come close when you think about it; it was FWD, had a low torque fuel sipper with a VTEC kick in at 1000rpm shy of red line and it's interior had the look and feel of an every day Honda Accord. The Lexus IS250 is much closer to what Acura needed in a sports sedan to begin with.

^so how about you pull all the sales numbers for the first gen.
and compare them to the second gen. like from 2004 or from 2006 or whatever on.
and show me how the 2nd gen is selling much over what the 1st gen did.

I'm not saying the 1G TSX was a bad car, although I did trade it in quicker than I had originally planned. If you want a FWD fuel sipper with a touch of class it's a great car. To ask for more also costs more.
The 2G is essentialy the same package except that it has a pretty long list of improvements, many of which were very important to me such as more torque, tighter steering ratio, backup camera, more sophisticated interior and exterior, more room in every direction, and I might be forgetting something, one touch moon roof, USB mp3, traffic and waether via XM, etc.

My actual plan: wait until 2014 and hope I like the 3G TSX.

Big Especially the part about the 2nd gen not speaking to me.

Riiiight, and that is no different than any other manufacturer that everyone is saying Acura should copy. I just want to be sure that I'm understanding correctly, we complain when they (Acura) worries that a V6 TSX will steal TL sales and so don't offer a choice. BUT when they finally offer the choice (that we complained about not having), we comment that it will steal sales from the TL.

You know which car they should really worry will steal sales from the TL? Every other car with a sticker price within $5000 of the TL.

Only thing I'm complaining about is no MT
Besides, who cares if it steals sales away from the TL. That's their problem. And we're kidding ourselves if we think they didn't think of that well before the V6 TSX was announced.
