you're not going to "ruin" a car based on a 10 min test drive. I can only comment on my experience. i went to the dealership, told the man I wanted to buy a manual car but that I didn't know how. He said no problem, got in the car with me and basically taught me the basics in about 15 min. It was really not a big deal, so get off your high horse.

Which is the same reason the car salesman won't let you learn on his brand new car.
Here's what the OP should do. Go to a few car dealers in his area and say "I'm interested in buying a manual transmission car because my buddies told me it is more fun. I don't know how to drive a stick so I'd like to borrow one of your nice shiny new cars to learn."
I'll pay him for every dealer that says yes. He'll pay me for every dealer that says no.

yes you can and trust me i have done it. After learning on a new renault encore the car never shifted the same and had a strange clunk and rattle afterwards.
If someone learns quickly, no harm no foul. If they burn up the clutch, and it can happen easily on some cars, someone has to pay for it.

im not advocating going to a dealership, telling them you know how to drive a manual when you clearly dont, then get in the car and burn the shit out of the clutch. you have to learn somehow and if you dont have anybody that can teach you, this is certainly an option that I, and at least one other person in this thread have used and made work.

my 6 year old cousin could drive an auto, possibly staight into a wall. if my 12 year old cousin could even go 5MPH without stalling, i'd give him a treat. no, not equivalent.
