Sunroof stuck open :(

So i went on a trip and 200 miles from home my shitty sunroof gets stuck open. goes like halfway and gets stuck gives and and goes back to fully open, i can hear some shit grinding or whatever.
Eventually i was able to close it after screwing around with it and pushing up slightly on the glass... and some rubber thing fell out, i can also hear some metal piece rattling around up there. I tried to look in there and i can't see shit. WTF is going on? anyone experience this?... I wont risk opening the sunroof now that it finally closed.

Umm . . . you should probably have that fixed. (isn't there a little crank like tool in the big styrofoam thingy that holds the jack to close it?) I can't look cause I don't have the car anymore.

That's what you get for ignoring the warning signs (sounds) that the moonroof needed maintenance. /knowitall

To the dealer!

I fully disassembled an early manual sunroof on a car I was stripping. It was interesting to see how everything was packaged in the roof. It made me realize I never wanted to touch one again! Everything was crammed into a little 2" pocket below the roof - nearly inaccessible.

I can't imagine how much more complex an automatic sunroof would be. If you've got it closed and it has a good seal, I'd just leave it alone until you can stomach taking it in to Acra to be repaired. But make sure it really is sealing because perhaps the absolute last thing you want is a busted AND leaking sunroof.

If it currently properly closed and sealed then use it for what it was intended for - a place to put your cup of coffee while loading stuff in the car without having to worry about scratching paint.

It is a real PITA to repair and will cost big bucks. Me? I'd disconnect the electrics to make sure I don't accidentally try to open it and call it a day.

Does the shade still work? Sorry to hear that but there probably is no good news.

Shade still works fine.

I'm gonna take it by the Acura dealer tomorrow and ask them if they will have a look at it without charging me.

I went back and looked at it. I can't see anything but i can tell what's wrong by feel. In between the shade and the sunroof there is a metal thing which is attached on both sides of the sunroof, on mine it has broken off somehow on the passenger side. Attached to this metal thing is the rubber peice that fell out.... So now that the metal thing is out the sunroof MIGHT work fine since it's not getting hit anymore. I went and checked 2 other hondas and that metal thing dosen't move and the rubber thing is attached to it. I have no idea what these parts are for though ...

Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?

What were you thinking?

Get the manual and read it. I think there is a section in there about manually closing the roof.

Acknowledging the problem is a good first step...
....

Make sure you bring your own lube when you go to Acura dealer so it won't hurt too bad.. I've heard good things about Shin Etsu grease..

Well i figured that the loose rubber piece was what was causing the problem... and now that it's out it would work. Obviously i was wrong

Gonna find the manual now.

I just checked. Nothing in the manual about closing the roof manually. Now you have no choice but to go to the dealer. Bring lube. Heavy thunderstorms today too.

But you're right - the manufacturers often add excess pieces that are unimportant to the proper operation of things like moon roofs

Yeah now i'm forced to take it there So there is no manual tool?

I see in my foam thing there is an empty space... i figured that would be where the tool is

I'll just leave the car in the garage today since like you said - thunderstorms later today

I think that empty space is for the Shin Etsu grease for dealer visits as thoiboi pointed out. Looks like yours is missing... That might be unpleasant.

I actually read the manual when I got the car but didn't pay too much attention to the moonroof since I never use it. I assumed that this car would be no different from the other cars I've owned that have a hole where you can insert a crank - the manual is silent about manual closing of the roof.

You go to Rosenthal, right? Is there a service advisor you've dealt with previously? If not, you might want to give these guys * a shout - probably cheaper than the dealer and may well do a free ballpark estimate.

* link enlarged so you won't overlook it.

Yeah i go to rosenthal. I get the same guy every time and he's a complete dick head. He straight up told me that I have no idea what i'm talking about when i showed him TSBs. Fucking ass....

Anyways, I have had some success. I was able to get the sunroof into vent mode and from there i was able to wiggle out the metal thing.

The sunroof now opens and closes as it should....but

Well, it turns out the metal thing is actually the drain piece. I don't know if the drain piece is only used when the thing is in vent mode, or if it's still required even when the roof is sealed.

Picture of the little fucker:

So now i just have to reattach it properly.

So i need to find the diagram for this, if there is one.

If all else fails i will take it to those guys you linked me. I hope i can fix it myself and save the repair costs.

Much as I am for DIY, in this case you might want to go to a proper tech because the last thing you want is a leak because you forgot to install some bushing or gasket.

Fixed it.

The glass is VERY easy to take out, the drain thing is held in with 4 clips, two of which are attached to guide rails and which are then held on with 2 plastic clips. The design of the sunroof is much more simple than i thought. I found a screenshot of the service manual online.

From there, I can see that one of those 2 plastic clips has broken (passenger side) and that just needed to be replaced. Thankfully none of the drain clips are broken so it just goes right back into place. New clip and it's good to go.

The guy at acura says this part has been redesigned for the newer model years because apparently this happens a ton. What a fail.

If i wasn't able to fix this myself it would have been a massive $500+ job because they drop the headliner, drop the rails and change it to the new design.

No way it'll leak, both drains are properly installed and working
