Q: 2nd Gen Service Question
Hey. Do you guys take it into service when your car reminds you to, or do you take it into service sticker tells you to? I realized I only had one service reminder on my car so far.. I took it in and they said that my next service was at 8000 miles.. then they say the next service is at 11,000 miles.. these are the sticker of course from the dealer, and it seems to be quite frequent..
My question to you guys is , do we have to go to service noted on the service sticker and what is that for? OR do we just go when our car's computer flashes and tells us to? Cause I feel if I got every several thousand miles, I'll be spending quite a bit of money.. given that the first oil change was 50, and the rotation of tires and 24 pt insepction/ oil change was 150...
Just curious cause if I don't need to go, I won't go and spend money... Thanks guys =D!

I still don't understand why the dealers put the stickers on when they know the cars have the maintenance minders. Most people follow the mm and not the stickers.
I have an '04 with no mm and hence take it every 5000 miles.

Your dealer is going off conventional wisdom which states that for max engine life, you change the oil every 3000 miles. Hence the 8000, 11000, etc.
The maintenance minder in the TSX monitors the engine conditions like oil temperature, how much time you spend at various rpms, and all the other sensors and then uses an algorithm to decide how much oil life you have left. It's perfectly safe to trust your car. It knows. Go with the MM, don't worry about the stickers.

this is a good point. I have 4500 miles on my car, and my oil life is at 40%. Will my car's reminder system tell me when to take it in, or should I take it in when it gets down to say, 20% or 10%?

I am currently at about 4500 miles, and at 20% oil life. I will be using Mobile 1 Synthetic once the MM tells me it's time. I think it's fine to follow the oil change intervals, the only times the MM doesn't really know is when it tries to get you to do certain things like the A, B, C maintenance, which sometimes is something as simple as checking the boots, brake lines and pads, changing the oil, but you can reset those warnings yourself, you don't have to go in to see the dealer.
