In the process of purchasing a second gen. Need advice!

So like the title says, I’m looking to purchase a used second gen. I don’t want a 09-11 because of the oil consumption issues. I was looking into the 2012’s and was reading a lot of problems with the power steering module or whatever it’s called going bad and getting the “check power steering” message along with loosing all power steering shortly after as a result. I seen a lot of comments of this happening to people while driving. Pretty scary. Does anyone know just how common this problem is with the 2012’s? And is it just with that year?

No oil consumption issues on my 2011 with 120K miles, so not all pre-'11s have that issue. I realize buying used it's not easy to determine if it has the issue or not, but don't automatically rule them out.

There are some topics regarding the EPS issue here:

This might make for good reading, too:

hmmm well maybe more people with 2011’s or even 2010’s can comment on the oil consumption issues.

maybe I’ll start looking at 2011’s and just have a PPI done to see if they can tell if it’s burning oil or whatever.

so you’ve never had the EPS issue with yours either? No problems since you’ve had it?

I've only owned it since March, but have all service records, and there's nothing for the P/S system. Looking at the fix in one of the topic I linked to, the part was $450 or so from Acura, so while not exactly cheap, that seems to take care of the issue for good.

I honestly don't love the electric steering, both the feel and potential for control loss during a failure, but just like electronic throttle control, you deal with tech advances and make yourself aware of the potential issues, like you are doing.

I was only looking for a Sport Wagon, so '11-'14 were my only options, so you have a bit more leeway in your search. Good service records are a big help IMHO, even just as far as knowing what issues he car may have had previously.

I guess I’ll just keep doing some research and see if it does fix the problem for good. I’m pretty sure I seen some comments where people said it happened multiple times. I think it was on carcomplaints.com

I've got a 2010 with 170K on the clock and I have never had any oil consumption issues, nor the power steering issue.....(knock on wood)

My 2011 doesn't burn any appreciable amount of oil during its entire oil change interval.

Depending on how our car is driven, the oil change indicator comes on between 5K and 10K miles.

I've never needed to add oil. *If* any of burns off, its maybe like 0.25 quarts in 9K miles or something.

The ONLY time the car has burned oil is the one time I used Mobil1. I cannot explain why. It burned off almost all the oil in like 2 or 3K miles and the "check level" light came on during a turn.

I use 0W20 always.

I think a lot of cars had issues when taking short trips. Our 2011 sees a LOT of short trips, as well as a lot of long road trips. And some normal driving in between. But a LOT of short, cold trips.

Maybe I'm just lucky?

Just crossed 100K miles recently.

I have no idea how one ascertains this info on a used car, though.

I have a 2009 owned since new, now has 230,000 kms., I have done all the maintenance since new, other than some recall work for brakes and engine pinging issue. As far as oil consumption goes I no longer follow the maintenance minder for oil changes. I'm changing oil every 6K-8K kms, depending when my other cars need an oil change. I try to do 3 vehicles at once while I have the ramps and all the tools out. I only use conventional oil (wallmart black friday special $12.99 CN 5 litre jug of Valvoline), every car I've owned I have easily put over 300,000 kms and never had an issue with oil burning.
Although note; the TSX will start to eat oil after 6,000 kms, I have monitored this over the last 10 years, at the 6K mark every 1K you can see a decline in oil level). The trick is to have relatively fresh oil in the engine.
My practice has been to fill the full 5 litre jug, this will take you to the upper fill indicator on your dipstick. At 6K you will notice a small drop in level at 7K you will still be above the lower limit at 8 K you need to add oil. Again this is only my experience based on the type of driving and frequency of oil changes that I do.

I did run the oil to a point where the maintenance minder was at 10%, and I said I would never do that again. That oil was like water and completely black, not worth to destroy a great K24 to save a couple of dollars.

The K24Z only costs a couple of dollars.

My advice, check the transmission fluid if you happen to get an auto, if it looks like its never been changed move on. Or find a good transmission shop ahead of time, took me about 6months in my area.
