Premium gas! Really?

Ok new to acura. Had numerous honda 4 bangers that ran fine on reg gas. Are they hiding a turbo somewhere or what? Will it start pinging under normal driving or just when some dork revs it to 7G.

Please search.

Acura TSX I4s are premium recommended. They don't require premium, but a number of us find the engine performs better.

I kind of wonder this myself to be honest. Also, the salesman at the Acura dealership says regular is fine, but I think that's just his opinion and not really something Acura personally told him. He also said he had leased a TSX SE and I assume that is what he used. But on the other hand he said he just leased a new Acura every 2 years, so it's not like he really cared about how reliable it would be long term.

The main difference is between "required" and "recommended". I might consider using a full tank of regular to see if I notice any difference. I'm on my first tank of premium since owning the car and currently am averaging 25 MPG all city, 300 miles, still have a quarter of a tank, I think.

Pretty much supposed to be required. Running regular will get you less performance and less mpg. Its your choice and later your engine may knock.

Also, in some markets, premium contains no ethanol (or less than regular). This will marginally increase mpg, as ethanol packs less energy per gallon than gasoline.

Right, i put premium in my car since it's been tuned with Hondata and I do want the performance.

For the standard configuration and somebody who dosen't even go past 3k rpm ever.... regular is fine.

almost 168K miles on my 06 tsx. Have used regular gas with no problems average over 30MPG. Use what works for you.

Ever look at the tach (redline is 7100)? I think the limiter is 7400.

of course I looked at the tach, the red starts at 7k, and doesn't have anything after that.. No lines or anything, that's why I was unsure.

Our compression ratio is 11-1, it will knock on regular.....period...... causing the timing to be retarded and loosing gas milage and performance so the $2.00 per fill up you save on regular is lost and long term engine damage is possible, timing is retarded after it knocks so it will see some knock every time you accelerate.

Nothing noticeable in the cabin but noticeable while the hood is up.

Not to be nit picky or anything, I get why people bring up the $ difference, but it's honestly closer to 7-8 bucks and not 2-3 like people always say, IDK that's always bothered me. That's considering you're filling up the whole tank though, I calculated 16 gallons and the current price for regular ($3.50) and premium ($3.95) where I'm located.

Hell, if it was $2-3 per full tank, there would be nothing to talk about.

I don't go on the highway very often at all. And I never cruise only accelerate.

^ You do have the V6 version though. I wouldn't try to make an exception for that.

Yeah, V6 is "premium required".

Although, my coworker with a 3G TL with 100k miles on it has always put in regular. He's made it this far at least.

If it's like my Audi, the computer will compensate for lower octane. What I found was the mpg was reduced enough that the $/mile worked out to be the same.

I only use 100 that I fill up at the local airport and racetrack.

I also only shift at 2100 rpm. No problems.

OP are you that cheap? It's a $4 variance, between 89 and 93 octane, per fill-up? give me a break man. So about $200/per year if you fill up once a week.

For the millionth time:

For these engines, you spend more money per mile using regular gas than you would using premium.

Stop being cheap!

That part is incorrect! You will get better MPG on regular. However don't expect any excitement from the accelerator pedal. I have proven this on every Honda I had "I have owned quite a few" with the exception of my V6 TSX that requires 93 octane. The best compromise for MPG & performance on the models that does not requires premium is Mid-Grade.

Anytime you retard ignition to prevent detonation, you are losing power and efficiency. These engines are designed for premium and CAN run regular if needed. It retards ignition timing to do so.

But hey, feel free to cause premature wear and tear on your engines. Go grab some 85 octane from Colorado and have fun!
